I bet he could still wheel a race car and whip some of these young prima-donnas! Rick is a heck of a nice guy and one of my childhood heroes as well. That 0 car will live on in many of my racing memories as a kid.

That looks like those plastic wings they were running in the 80's. I remember Ferkel was one of the few that tried them.

hmmm.... red & white - not cream & orange? ... and kickrails? Are you sure this is Rick?

I know ... it is.

Remember when so many people had t-shirts and signs @ Knoxville: "Ferkel for President"? We could sure use him running this year.

I would venture to say that the Ohio Traveler is by far the most liked and respected driver of all.

Check that seat out.I used to camp out at the Marion county park back in the mid 70's and Rick was camped clear out back with his open trailer in a little spot all by himself.Back in the barn days if you were there.Cream and orange.Should have won ,he had the fastest car running on seven cylinders I have ever seen.

Even today, I don't think Rick could stand not being at the track every week. Still one of the most approachable people in the pits. He always has time to chat a bit with anyone who appraches him.

A few years ago I asked him if he thought the competition was tougher today from top to bottom than in the past. He said, "I don't know. I've never raced against them." He also said the best racer he's ever competed against, hands down, was Jan Opperman.

You wouldn't have needed memories if you'd have come to Eagle last night.Smile

I stopped and talked to Rick after the races last night. Same big old smile and humble demeanor that I remembered. I told him it did my old heart good to see that 0 back on the track, and he replied "Mine too".

I told Jeremy Campbell what a good job he did, and he was SOO humble he outdid Rick!! Considering his age and experience Jeremy did a whale of a job. Rick and I took turns giving Jeremy kudos.

Thank you Rick. Not just for giving Jeremy a chance. Not just for bringing the cream and orange Zero back. But also for being yourself; then, now and always.

I am lucky enough to work at one of the best tracks
anywhere.
