Bad luck continues for Mason Myers while Cody runs sixth in 23rd wingless point race

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – July 28, 2008… The Myers Brothers Racing Team finished off the month of July at the Silver Dollar Speedway with the Joe Hunt Magnetos/John Padjen Motorsports Wingless Sprint Car Series competing alongside the traveling 410 sprints of the Golden State Challenge Series.

The 22nd overall wingless point race saw a total of 18 cars on hand to do battle at the racy Silver Dollar Speedway quarter-mile clay oval. The long Joe Hunt Magnetos wingless sprint car series is nearing its season’s end and the Myers Brothers Racing Team continues to dig away while trying to get that first win of the year.

This past Friday night saw both Mason and Cody line-up on the outside of the front row in the evening’s opening heat race. When flagman Willie Williams dropped the green flag Mason held his line on the bottom with Cody upstairs and the pair went side-by-side for the entire opening lap, until Cody was able to get the drive and put the Franks Backhoe Inc, Swepco No. 9 into the lead.

Mason then battled with Jimmy “Loveshack” Pettit on the second circuit before getting a bit over the edge in turn two and dropping back to fifth. Meanwhile Cody continued to sit out front and held off a furious last couple lap challenge from Pettit to pick up his third heat race victory of the season. Mason motored on in fifth for the duration of the heat and crossed under the checkered in that position aboard the Performance Auto Supply, Cal West Concrete No. 3m.

When the 25 lap feature event pushed onto the speedway it saw Cody starting from the third row inside and Mason on the outside of the fifth row. A very quick racing surface was put together and it made for some exciting racing on the quarter-mile bullring. Mason was doing his best to move forward but his night would come to an end just six laps into the main event when a spark plug issue left him parked on the infield.

Cody spent much of the 25 lap contest running on the cusp of the top five and trying his best to make the high-side work. The Browns Valley driver would run a smooth race and bring the Aces Heavy Transport, Browns Valley Truck & RV, JB Enterprises sprinter home in the sixth spot. It marked Cody’s 15th top ten of the season and has been a great second half rebound for the driver who was plagued with tough luck during the early part of the year.

This Friday night will see the Myers Brothers Racing Team return to the Silver Dollar Speedway for Care Free Pools Night, which will kick off the final full month of racing for the Joe Hunt Magnetos/JPM Wingless Sprint Car Series. The team will look to run up front and continue to tune-up for the special Wednesday night Gold Cup event that is coming up in just over a month.
