Geving garners career best third place finish in round nine of Civil War Series at Petaluma Speedway

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (7-26-08) – Penngrove’s Alissa Geving made another stride in her quest for the 2008 Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Series Rookie of the Year title with an impressive third place finish in the ninth segment of the series at her home track of Petaluma Speedway. The outing was Sixteen year old Geving’s highest finish of the year in the competitive series. Her success not only strengthened her top ten position in the series point standings but also improved her point lead in the weekly All Pro Points series at Petaluma Speedway.

Geving started her night with a 7th place run in qualifying , turning a 13:03 second lap on the 3/8 mile track aboard her Matt Cordeiro Enterprises, Pit Stop USA, Auto Repairs Unlimited, Tillett Tool sponsored #3x Maxim Sprint Car. The effort placed her on the outside of the third row of the evening’s third heat race. In the 10-lap preliminary race Geving finished in set place to secure a third place starting position in the A-feature.

At the waving of the green flag, Geving maintained her third place starting position by charging ahead of fourth place starter Herman Klein of Sacramento. Pole sitter Adam McCarthy of San Jose took the lead of the event while second place starter Mike Benson of Calistoga assumed second place in front of Geving. For the entire 25-lap event, Benson had his hands full as Geving applied pressure to the bridesmaid from lap one until lap 25.

“We had a good starting spot in the A-feature tonight and I wasn’t going to give that up for sure, points were really important tonight since this race counts for our weekly series too,” said Geving. “There wasn’t much room to pass tonight, I tried to get underneath Benson every chance I got but there just wasn’t enough room to make any type of pass.”

Late in the race traffic became too close for comfort on one of the many restarts, causing a chain reaction bump and go. Geving briefly collided into the rear of Benson before he accelerated at the green flag, tearing her front wing loose from the mounts for the remainder of the race. Despite the lack of the down force and the chance of the stray wing cutting the front tire, Geving maintained her third place stance for the remainder of the race, holding off the challenges of Alpine driver Christian Stover and Kyle Larson to the finish line.

“I got a little worried when the wing came loose that I would lose a tire,” said Geving. “But I stayed out there and stayed focused. I really want to congratulate Adam McCarthy on his first Civil War win tonight. They have always helped me a lot since moving to sprint cars and I’m really happy for him tonight and for our third place finish.”

This Saturday, Geving and her Chicko Motorsports Team will return to Placerville Speedway in El DoradoCounty to compete in round 10 of the Civil War Series. In two weeks the team returns to their own backyard as Calistoga Speedway hosts round 11 of the campaign, the final regular Civil War event prior to the Pacific Sprint Cup Invitational at the Gold Cup Race of Champions in Chico in September, an event which Geving as already locked an eligible entry with her position in the point standings.
