Bud Kaeding finishes off weekend with 5th place run in Antioch

By Gary Thomas

Antioch, CA – July 19, 2008…Campbell’s Bud Kaeding finished off the next to last weekend of the Golden State Challenge Series season with a fifth place finish at the Antioch Speedway on Saturday night. It was a rebound for Kaeding following a pair of races where issues had left him with finishes that were less than hoped for.

The event at the Antioch Speedway on Saturday marked the third to final race of the GSC season and saw tough conditions early on as qualifying times were well off the pace from the first series visit to the track earlier this season. Kaeding timed in 10th fastest in the field before running fourth in his heat race and with a couple cars not transferring out, it put him into the dash.

The two-time Silver Crown champ lined-up in the second row for the six lap contest, but spun in turn two after a car in front of him got sideways and left him with nowhere to go. He restarted and ran seventh at the finish to put the Alviso Rock, K & N Filters No. 29 in the fourth row for the evening’s 30 lap main event. The quarter-mile bullring had become tricky for the feature and Kaeding hung around seventh for much of the running.

The 28 year-old kept at it and took advantage of a bicycle by Tommy Tarlton to move into sixth just after the midway point. He then moved up another spot when a top five car dropped out with just eight laps remaining in the race and was able to maintain the position for the remaining distance. Kaeding crossed under Willie Williams’ checkered flag in fifth place to score his 10th top five of the GSC season.

It came on the heels of a tough night in Watsonville where Kaeding had hoped to run up front at his home track. The Campbell racer qualified 13th quickest in the field on Friday and also finished 13th in the main event after a spin in turn four following contact with a lapped car with just five laps left in the race. A heavy track was presented to competitors on Friday and Kaeding was running in the ninth spot when the spin occurred.

Kaeding will be right back in action this coming Wednesday when he travels back east to compete with the USAC K & N Filters Silver Crown Series at the Terre Haute Action Track in Indiana. It will be just his second series start after finishing runner-up at the Copper on Dirt in Manzanita earlier this year.

This coming weekend will also find the Golden State Challenge Series in competition at the Silver Dollar Speedway for the final two nights of the 2008 season. Kaeding will go into the weekend sitting third in the point standings and will look to put the MDR Machine, Kaeding Performance Maxim toward the front of the field both nights. The Friday portion of the weekend will pay $4,000 to win the main event courtesy extra money from Specialized Parts Planet.

Saturday’s event will be the annual Tribute to Gary Patterson, which is being held at the Silver Dollar Speedway for the very first time. The Tribute to GP had been held at the Calistoga Speedway since 1984 and with the track not holding any Golden State Challenge Series shows this season, it has moved over to Chico where it will hopefully prosper for many years to come. To top the weekend off Cherry St. Mini Storage is also putting up a $1,000 bonus to the driver who gains the most points over the two nights of action.
