Myers Brothers Racing competes in another double-header weekend

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – July 14, 2008…The busiest stretch of the season for the John Padjen Motorsports Wingless Sprint Car Series is upon us and the Myers Brothers Racing Team continue to battle it out in search of that first win of the year. Just one week after having one of the roughest weekends of the season so far, the team returned to action and had a much smoother go of it this past Friday and Saturday.

The action kicked off on Friday night at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico where the Fairgrounds continues to be used as a home base for the many firefighters and personal that are battling the surrounding fires. A short car count for all divisions was seen on Friday and it was a blessing as race officials wanted to get the show done in a timely fashion.

Two heat races were held during the evening with Mason and Cody both being in the second of the pair. With the smoke from the fires covering the sun and a lot of water being applied to the track during the day it made for a very wet surface for heat race competition. Mason was able to bring home a third place finish in the heat aboard the Cal West Concrete No. 3m and Cody drove the Performance Supply No. 9 to a fifth place result.

For the main event the track remained very hooked up and made passing chances limited with everyone being virtually the same speed. Mason lined-up fourth in 20 lap contest and carved his way into second at the start, before going after the early leader. The youngster then began to have some heat applied by winged sprint car regular Kyle Hirst and was able to hold him off for a handful of laps until Hirst got the bite up high to take over the position.

Over the final laps Mason continued to battle amongst the top five and at the checkered flag he sat in the fifth position to tally his sixth top five finish of the season. Cody was stuck a little further back in the field as he started from the fifth row and attempted to run the high scary side for much of the feature. Early on he made progress, but began to get held up in the pack and finished the main event in the ninth spot after 20 laps of racing aboard the Aces Heavy Transport No. 9.

On Saturday the Myers Brothers Racing Team made the haul over to the Placerville Speedway to take part in the third annual Mark Forni Classic. The high number of races over the last few weeks appeared to take its toll on the car count as just nine wingless spec sprints showed up for the night of racing. Both Mason and Cody were able to run up front in the short field as Mason came home in second behind point leader Keith Bloom and Cody crossed the stripe just behind him in third.

The hectic schedule will continue this weekend with another back to back show and it will begin on Friday night at the Silver Dollar Speedway with wingless point race No. 20. The evening of competition will be run in conjunction with the traveling Civil War Winged 360 Series which should make it a great night of racing at the Silver Dollar bullring. Then on Saturday it will be right back to the Placerville Speedway with hopes of having a little higher car count to put on a full show for the fans. Going into the weekend Mason continues to rank third in points with Cody sitting right behind in fourth.
