Flat tire takes away top five run for Bud Kaeding in Chico

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – July 14, 2008…Campbell’s Bud Kaeding was on his way to another top five finish with the Golden State Challenge Series until suffering a flat tire with just eight laps remaining in the main event this past Saturday night at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.

Kaeding came into the event on Saturday after finishing in the fourth spot the previous Saturday at the Chico based quarter-mile clay oval and looked to close in on Tyler Walker who sat second in GSC points, just 19 digits ahead.

The two-time Silver Crown champ began the evening by clocking the fifth fastest lap in qualifying and driving the Alviso Rock, Kaeding Performance Maxim to a runner-up finish in his heat race. Kaeding then drew a last row starting spot for the dash and finished seventh in the six lap contest to put him in the fourth row of the 30 lap feature.

The Silver Dollar Speedway surface was hooked up and rough in various spots like the old days and it created an action packed main event that saw a number of flips, spins and wheel stands. Lining up in eighth Kaeding moved forward quickly and was up to the top five by the time a handful of laps had been completed.

Unfortunately the K & N Filters, MPD Racing Products No. 29 had a tire going down with about 10 laps remaining in the race and it went flat on the 22nd circuit, which forced Kaeding to pit and get a new right rear. After making the tire change the 28 year-old tagged the rear of the field and carved his way back through to get up to 10th by time the checkered flag came out.

Kaeding was also in action on Friday night at the Ocean Speedway where he qualified second fastest and finished sixth in the feature while driving the Werbach Motorsports, Los Gatos Construction Company No. 20. With father Brent winning the main event on Friday he has closed in on the point lead and Bud now holds onto a slim five point advantage over the older BK.

This coming weekend will find Kaeding and BK Motorsports in action during a Golden State Challenge Series double-header weekend. It will begin on Friday with the fourth and final GSC visit to the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville. During the previous series visit to the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds track Kaeding brought home a runner-up finish and hasn’t been out of the top five in any previous GSC stop at the speedway this season.

On Saturday Kaeding and the team will head for the Antioch Speedway to battle on the tight-bullring. The Campbell veteran raced to a fifth place finish when the Golden State Challenge Series visited the track in early April and will look to put the No. 29 sprinter in victory lane as the GSC season is nearing its conclusion.
