A buddy and I are going to Knoxville for the nationals!!! The best Airfare we have found is $440.00 per person round trip from LAX to Des Moines I know its alot cheaper than driving(with gas prices these days) Does anyone know of anything better??? Please let us know... You add in hotel rental car and food and you got yourself one heck of a budget to live by... At least for us... Or Does Anyone Want to Sponsor Our AirFare lol -TOM-

If you've never been to Knoxville for the Nationals, I say it's a must see...At least Wednesday and Thursday nights, when they do a full invert on the heats.....the fastest guys start in the back on those nights....Saturday night is straight up, so you don't see as much passing....
If you don't have rooms yet and want to save a few bucks, the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce sponsors a program where they hook you up with a Knoxville resident - you negotiate your own prices with the resident, but it can be a good deal.. Do a google web search for the Knoxville, Iowa Chamber of commerce....It all means less driving after the races, which may mean a few more beers, if you know what I mean...
If you can get a room in Knoxville, there are a lot of food options around town. The National Guard Armory serves breakfast daily, and there are lots of food stands, restaurants, and supermarkets where you can get a good meal at a good price....

The pork chop sandwiches are 2 inches thick and melt in your mouth. If you don't have rooms yet and if you can't get a resident room in Knoxville, try Pella, Iowa they do the same thing and it's right across the dam of Red Rock Resevoir, ten miles from the track.

Flying in to Des Moines is not usually the cheapest option. You may want to look in to flying in to either Omaha or Kansas City. Yeah, it adds three hours of driving each way, but the savings can sometimes be worth it.
Another option, according to my friends in Iowa, Allegiant Air. If you can find a cheap flight to Las Vegas, the fares from Las Vegas to Des Moines on Allegiant can be as low as $69 each way.

Here's the chamber link with a 2007 housing application... you might call the chamber to see if there's a different form for 2008

Pastrami sandwich. Pork sandwich. Wow, you guys go all out. For me it's usually meatloaf at Hy-Vee or a Walking Taco at the track.
Make sure you put an hour or two in to your schedule to visit the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum. Drives me crazy when I see people just breeze through there in 15 minutes.

I think the real reason for my Visit is the Sprint Car Hall Of Fame..... Those who blow through in a couple of minutes Dont really appreciate the sport, For what it was and what its evolved into....
By the way Ziggy, I think we are going to bring a crock pot with us and some pastrami... We might just set up a piece of plywood on some bricks and start selling them there lol as well as eat many of them ourselves,, It might get us some extra beer money!!!!

Hey Grunk, I think you should sell them at the races every week, then you could pay for your whole Knoxville trip!!!!! Have you found a room yet?

That is a great Idea!!!! It could even pay for you to go with us, lol, I can already see the sign I would put up. No we dont have rooms yet I sent the paperwork off for the Housing Request Through the city council. Now I am going to wait to see if any of the locals there will rent us a room!!!! you know anyone up there??? I am still planning out the whole airfare stuff, I am trying to set it up so we have at least a 4-5 hour layover in Vegas...

4 hours in Vegas???
You're just asking for trouble, boy..... That's just enough time to lose enough $$$ that you'll try and win it back... which just might make you miss the connection!!!!
And I like Vegas....
It sounds like its gonna be a fun trip.....

Fly into Kansas City and get a rental car. I have some connection with Enterprise. I buy about ten cars a month from them for our lot. Also , my son Nate just moved back there and we just bought hin a 3600 sq foot house you can stay in when you fly in and out. Give me a call and I'll give you a hand.

Definitely take the time for the HoF, it's well worth it. The last time we were there they had two of Evelyn Pratt's bull horns from the old CRA days along with some pictures of them in use.
