The board has gone quiet so I thought this question might be an interesting way to get things going again. I believe something similar to this question was asked on the IOW Board. Name your top five all-time sprint car drivers.
Here's mine (in no particular order):
Jan Opperman
Tony Jones
Gary Patterson
Nick Rescino
Sammy Swindell
|
the "WILDMAN"Rodney Argo
Dave Darland
Josh Wise
Pancho Carter
and of course Al "the" Boner

Very cool to see you list Nick Rescino along with the others.
It seems Nick is often overlooked when it comes to truly great drivers. Perhaps it's because he did most of his racing on the west coast.
He won in Super Modifieds, and in Sprint Cars. Most know, he even beat the Sprint Cars with his Super Modified. Dirt, pavement, it didn't matter. "Quick" Nick was going to be a threat to win. He held many track records during his time. And through most of career, he built his own motors.

The price of crack must have really come down recently.

The question was who is your favorite not who won the most. Does that change your answer?

This is a tough one. Guys I watched as a kid and some I raced with later. Still tough.
****There are the guys who I think were the absolute best. The ones who were a factor almost every night, at any track, with or without a wing.****
Jac Haudenschild
Ron Shuman
Jack Hewitt
Brent Kaeding
Dave Bradway Jr
Maybe not in that exact order, but I watched them all from Calistoga to Ascot, with and without a wing......and they were always in the hunt.
*****My favourites as the best drivers that I ever watched at home in Calistoga.*****
Leroy Van Connett
Jimmy Boyd
Both Billy & Johnny Anderson (I was young and my memory is a little mixed up?)
Dave Bradway Jr.
Chuck Gurney
*****My Heroes****
Leroy Van Connett ,Rick & Ron Horton, Tom Abreu, Darrell Hanestad, Dave Bradway Jr, Richard Forsberg, Mike McCreary, Hank Butcher, Mike Andreetta, Shane Scott, and all the guys from Calistoga...Les & Lonnie Blakeley, Don Meyer, Mark Wolleson, Augie Grube, Ron Schlegal, My Dad (not a driver).................
These are the nicest guys. The ones who would take time and talk with you after the races. The funnest guys who made racing a blast and kept everyone in stitches. The underdogs that I cheered for when everything went right and they were finally having a good night. The ones who set the example and gave me hope that I might get a chance to do it someday and the ones who helped me when I finally got my chance. I cheered for Sparky when he won at Calistoga and I cheered when I heard Benson won Calistoga. The list is different for everyone because of where they grew up. Anyone can say Foyt or Stewart and who could argue?
There is one name I didn't mention. Steve Kinser is not only the undisputed all time sprint car King, but a real nice guy also. He is in a league of his own and has my respect as the all time best.

I know that's only three, but the rest aren't really "all time" favorites.

These are my all time favorite drivers. They are in no particular order.
Mike Kirby
Eddie Wirth
Rick Goudy
Walt Kennedy
Jerry Meyer
There are many others that I really like also but these are my favorites. There have been very few that I didn't like over the years.
