RESEDA’S KIERCE POINTS TOWARD WINNING ALL COAST CHALLENGE
by Lee Elder

VENTURA, Calif. (July 8, 2008) – Who has the edge?

That’s the question Ventura Raceway sprint car drivers and fans are asking this week. Who has the edge in Saturday’s second round of the All Coast Construction 3-2-1 Challenge?

“I can tell you that nobody wants it as bad as Chris Wakim,” VRA points leader Kevin Kierce said. All Coast Construction sponsors Wakim’s car. “I wouldn’t want another driver to win my sponsor’s money. But (Greg) Taylor is always tough and I’m sure (Troy) Rutherford will be there, he’s tough. So is (Clark) Templeman and (Rick) Hendrix and (Richard) McCormick.”

The Challenge, a three-race series-within-a-season with a special payout for the top finishers, resumes July 12. Two classes of United States Auto Club (USAC Ford Focus Midgets and USAC Jr. Focus Midgets) cars are scheduled, as are the Ventura Racing Association Dwarf Cars and youth divisions.

Kierce, the former track champion from Reseda, won the first installment of the 3-2-1 Challenge on March 29. He leads the regular season standings and has four wins to his credit.

And, make no mistake about it: Kierce wants to win the Challenge.

“I want it,” Kierce said. “If I work as hard at winning this thing as Mike Grosswendt has at making it happen, I’ll win it.”

Grosswendt and All Coast Construction worked with Raceway Promoter Jim Naylor to bring the Challenge to the Raceway. All Coast Construction sponsors the special points fund.

So who has the edge?

Kierce has two cars and both have won races this season. But he’s bringing his best equipment to the track this weekend.

“The orange car has won three times and finished second twice,” Kierce said. “It has not been out of the top three in seven races.”

Kierce’s cars are sponsored by Fast Undercar, Direct Tire, Hasa Chemicals, Metropolis Disposal and the Justice Brothers.

Don't forget vrafan.com is also running the New Fan Challenge this weekend. This is an opportunity for a regular fan to bring a newbie and and both will win 250 bones. Theoretically, Kevin could win the race (and the vra points plus the challenge points), win the trifecta and win the New Fan Challenge. He's not called the Calculator for nothing! Seriously, two fans will walk out with some cool cash. The weather should be perfect. Come out to the "commotion by the ocean" for a hammer down Saturday night.
