Myers Brothers Racing marches on through eventful weekend

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – July 7, 2008…The 4th of July holiday weekend marked the start of a big month of racing at the Silver Dollar Speedway and the Myers Brothers Racing Team hoped to run near the front during the special two-night event. What transpired was a rather tough weekend of competition, but the team won’t let that deter the goal of maintaining a pair of positions in the top five of the point standings.

The July 4th double-header weekend began on Friday and featured a large crowd on hand to witness the 15th point race of the Feather Falls Casino season at the Silver Dollar Speedway. Going into the event Mason Myers ranked third in the standings with brother Cody sitting right behind him in fourth.

The largest car count in recent weeks was on hand for the Friday night show as 26 wingless sprint cars made the haul to the Silver Dollar Speedway and another well prepared track was presented to competitors. Mason Myers drew the pole position for the night’s opening heat race and took the lead at the waving of the green and never looked back to pick up the victory aboard the Cal West Concrete, Don’s Landscaping No. 3m.

Cody Myers was also in the evening’s opening heat race and brought home a fifth place finish to transfer him into the A-main as well. When the scheduled 20 lap feature came to the grid Mason found himself starting from the fifth position with Cody lining-up on the outside of the ninth row. The initial start of the main event saw a scary crash occur in turn four that created a lengthy delay.

When the racing got back underway about 30 minutes later Cody was involved in a frightening crash himself when he got jammed up just past the flag stand and flipped all the way to the outside of turn one and came to a rest outside the fence that separates the track from the fairgrounds. He jumped out of the car unscathed, albeit a bit sore and suffering from a headache.

When the action got underway once again Mason was able to move forward during the race and settled into third as the laps wound down. The youngster was battling for the runner-up spot when he and another driver banged wheels, which left him with front end damage and put an end to the night just a few laps short of the finish.

The team drove back to Browns Valley following the races and spent much of the day fixing the damage and getting another car ready for Cody to run during the event on Saturday. The Myers Brothers Racing Team arrived to the speedway later than usual, but was ready for a chance to rebound from the previous night.

Like Friday both brothers were in the same heat race once again and Cody scored fourth with Mason running sixth in the third and final eight lap contest. The 20 lap main event saw Cody start from the 10th position and he was able to charge up into the top five early on as he ran high-side of the quarter-mile clay oval. Unfortunately over-heating issues forced him to pull off the speedway on lap seven and put an end to the weekend aboard the Browns Valley Truck & RV, Aces Heavy Transport No. 9.

Mason started way back in the 18th position during the main event and was involved in an accident on the third lap, forcing him to restart at the rear of the field. A number of cautions at the start of the race prolonged the running of the feature, but Mason was able to regroup and drive the Franks Backhoe, Matco Tools, JB Enterprise sprinter through the field and cross the line in seventh at the checkered flag.

With the weather expected to turn blazing hot this week the John Padjen Motorsports Wingless Spec Sprint Series will head for another double-header weekend this Friday and Saturday. On Friday it will be another event at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico and Saturday will be off to the always action packed Placerville Speedway located at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds in Placerville.

The Myers Brothers are a dedicated bunch, both had major troubles on Friday, worked all day Saturday, towed back to the track just about 20 minutes before hot laps and raced on Saturday..good job.
