Brett Miller scores 8th place finish with GSC in Chico

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – July 5, 2008…Chico’s Brett Miller competed in a double-header of action this past weekend at the Silver Dollar Speedway and capped it all off by driving to his best Golden State Challenge Series finish of season with an eighth place result aboard the Care Free Pools No. 1x.

The annual 4th of July show at Silver Dollar Speedway kicked off the weekend on Friday and early on in the feature it looked like Miller would be in for a good run after getting a great start at the waving of the green flag. The 18 year-old started 12th and was able to get under 13-time King of California Brent Kaeding on the start to move the Platinum Powder Coating, JP’s Paint & Body Maxim into the top 10 on the opening lap.

As Miller battled with Kaeding on the backstretch he got over the edge however, and spun off turn three to bring out a caution. “The Catfish” restarted and was working his way back through the field when he got together with another car and came to a stop in turns one and two, which put an end to the night. It was a tough way to go out since the car had seemed to be quick, but Miller and the team remained focused and came back on Saturday looking for better things.

The event on Saturday was the 17th race of the Golden State Challenge Series season and marked the fourth time Miller had competed with the traveling circuit this year. A strong field of 37 winged sprint cars signed in at the back gate and the defending GSC Rookie of the Year began the night by timing in 16th fastest aboard the Al’s Concrete, Wolfe Electric Maxim.

It put Miller in the second row of the night’s final heat race, but on the opening lap the pole sitter came to a stop and it moved the No. 1x machine up to the pole. When the green lights came back on the Chico racer jumped into the lead and was able to hold onto the top spot until the very last corner when USAC National driver Brad Sweet got by up top to steal the win away by about an inch.

The second place finish in the heat race was still good enough to transfer into the main event though and Miller lined-up on the outside of the sixth row in the 30 lap contest. The youngster was able to move forward at the start and jump into the eighth position by the time six laps had been completed. Miller ran the high scary side for much of the race and made the move around Jason York just past the midway point to take over the seventh spot.

The Silver Dollar Speedway was very racy on this night and as the laps wound down Miller had to deal with GSC regular Evan Suggs. Miller and Suggs ran nose to tail for a number of laps before Suggs was able to get by with just a handful of laps remaining in the race. “The Catfish” ran the remaining laps solidly in eighth and was able to take the checkered in that spot to record his best GSC finish of the season.

After a season filled with tough luck Miller and the Care Free Pools team were happy with the eighth place finish and will look to build on that during this upcoming weekend. On Friday night the 18 year-old will be in action in another round of Feather Falls Casino point race competition during a night sponsored by Moore Insurance Services.

The next night will see the Golden State Challenge King of California Series return to Chico for another round of action at the Silver Dollar Speedway. For the season it will be the 18th round of competition for the traveling 410 series and will be the start of five to go until the King of California is crowned at the end of this month.
