Tough break takes away top five for Mason Moore in Chico

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – June 30, 2008…Princeton’s Mason Moore had another top five run going at the Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday night until a mechanical issue took away his chances at another good finish just a handful of laps short of the checkered. Going into the tenth Feather Falls Casino 410 point race of the season at Silver Dollar Speedway Moore sat third in points and was just one of a pair of drivers to have finished in the top 10 during each prior race.

A warm and smoky day was presented to racers on Friday, but the track prep crew did a great job and the surface lent well to great racing in the main event. A field of 23 winged sprint cars was on hand for Riebe’s Auto Parts Night at the quarter-mile track and the 17 year-old started off well by qualifying the Rolling Hills Casino, NOS Energy Drink No. 22 fourth quickest.

Moore then lined-up fifth and finished fifth in the night’s opening heat race to transfer into the feature. With fast qualifier Andy Forsberg pulling the number four pill it then put the Moore Insurance Services, Platinum Powder Coating Eagle on the pole for the main event. “Primetime” settled into second at the start, but began to dice it up with the drivers running among the top five.

Early on a number of cautions and reds slowed the flow of the main event, but once all of that was over a long green flag run was seen. Moore ran around the top five for most of the main event and had settled into fourth as the laps wound down, but with just four circuits remaining he slowed and came to a stop on the front stretch. He was unable to restart and was officially placed 11th in the rundown since so many cars had already dropped out.

After the night of racing Moore continues to sit third in the Feather Falls Casino point standings and is now 46 back of leader Andy Forsberg and 19 behind second place Sean Becker. Racing will resume at Silver Dollar Speedway with a double-header of action this weekend beginning with the annual 4th of July show on Friday. It’ll be the eleventh 410 point race of the season at the bullring and will conclude with a firework display

Then on Saturday the traveling Golden State Challenge King of California 410 Series will invade the Silver Dollar Speedway for the 17th point race of the season. During the previous GSC visit to the track Moore started from the front row and led laps in the main event before finishing in the ninth position. The Moore Insurance Services team will look for another good run this weekend while racing against some of the top sprint car drivers in California.

This weekend will begin a busy month for the Chico based track as another two-day show will be held next weekend, followed by a Civil War Series event the next Friday after that and the month will come to an end with another double-header, which will put an end to the GSC season. The final night of the Golden State Challenge Series season will be the annual Gary Patterson Memorial, an event that moved to Chico from Calistoga this year. It should be a great experience building month for the 17 year-old driver and he will look to put the No. 22 sprinter up front all month long.
