Zack West hangs in for 7th place finish on Friday at Chico

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – June 27, 2008…Finishing races is a big key in racing and Chico’s Zack West was able to do just that on Friday night at the Silver Dollar Speedway and drove the Ing Excavation, Community Construction No. 14 to a season best seventh in the winged sprint car main event.

West, who had missed a couple months of action due to engine issues, returned to competition a couple Friday’s ago in Chico and was on way to a good night before contact in the main event sent him upside down. The 18 year-old came back this past Friday evening in hopes of putting together some laps and looking for a good finish.

West came out 21st in the qualifying order and his quickest lap of 13.087 put the Cinecon Group Inc, Pace Supply JEI, 15th fastest in the order. He then started from the front row in his heat race and got the jump into turn one, but race officials called the start back as they had deemed that the whole field was not aligned properly.

An accident on the next start created a single file restart and it forced West to start from the second spot. When the green lights came back on he lost a spot to Mark Hall and then quickly had to deal with former King of California Jonathan Allard. West continued to hold his own in the Lee Watson wrenched machine and was able to hold off Allard, as well as Kyle Hirst to bring home a third place finish and transfer into the main event.

The 25 lap contest saw West start back in 13th and early on had some contact, which bent the header on the Franklin Construction, A.R.T. Enterprise No. 14. A not so smooth noise echoed from the car all race long, but the youngster was able to continue on and after 25 laps of racing crossed the line in seventh, scoring his first top 10 finish of the season in five starts.

This coming weekend will find West’s father have other commitments, which will leave the We St-ing Racing 410 sprinter on the sidelines. There was talk of working something out with another team so there is a possibility that the youngster will be able to compete at Silver Dollar Speedway next weekend during the 4th of July show, as well as the Golden State Challenge Series event on Saturday.
