Jimmy Pettit dominates heat race and finishes 4th in feature at Silver Dollar Speedway

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – June 27, 2008…Chico’s Jimmy Pettit continued his consistency over the last month by driving to a fourth place finish in the 20 lap wingless sprint car main event at the Silver Dollar Speedway this past Friday night. It marked Pettit’s sixth top five finish in 11 starts with the John Padjen Motorsports wingless series and came on Riebe’s Auto Parts Night.

A field of 16 wingless spec sprints signed in on a night where the air was filled with smoke from the various fires in the surrounding Chico area. The fairgrounds were full of fire personal, but thankfully the races were able to go off without a hitch and a great night of racing ensued.

Pettit began the evening by starting from the front row in the opening heat race and proceeded to get a huge jump on the field. The Chico driver pulled away from the rest of the cars and dominated the heat to win by over a straightaway aboard the Skyway Tool Center, Pep Boys No. 24p.

Pettit then pulled the number eight pill for the inversion and due to the passing points system it put him on the inside of the third row for the 20 lap wingless sprint car main event. The Silver Dollar Speedway surface was well prepared on this night and featured some great action in the feature. Pettit moved up early on and played it safe over the final laps to drive the Joe Hunt Magneto’s, Kevin Sharrah Designs No. 24p to a fourth place finish at the checkered flag.

“We had a good night and I’m happy to get another strong finish,” Pettit said. “My crew chief Ron Kalpakoff had the car perfect in the heat race and it was fun to be able to pull away like that, because I figured somebody would be sticking their nose in sooner or later. We’ll now go on and hopefully have another good night on the 4th of July," he concluded.

This year the 4th of July falls on a Friday so the racing action will be just like any other weekend, unlike when it usually makes for a special mid-week show. Pettit will go into the night looking for season win #4 as well as make up some ground in the standings.
