Geving looks to end hard luck streak in American Valley Speedway Civil War event this Saturday

By Bill Sullivan

PENNGROVE, CA (6-16-08) – The half mile Calistoga Speedway is a track known for triumph and tribulations. The largest track in California can present a driver with the most meaningful win of their career or can hand them a great deal of hardship. Last Saturday night, Penngrove’s Alissa Geving saw both those sides of Calistoga Speedway in the annual Hoosier Racing Tires Calistoga Cup.

“Calistoga is one of my favorite places to go,”said Geving. “But this wasn’t my night and our hard luck streak continued. I was really excited to make it into the A-main but disappointed with the crash that ended my night way too soon.”

After a gearing error in qualifying, Geving started Saturday’s preliminary events in the eight place position in the third heat race of the evening. Racing on a surface that has not hosted any form of competition all year, very little passing was possible in the event. Geving drove as high as the sixth place position, just two spots out of fourth place which would have placed her directly into the A-feature rather than the undesirable 12-lap B-main event.

Starting in the 15th position of the B-feature, Geving set her sights on reaching the top six positions in a last chance effort to make the money race and she had just 12 laps to do it. Despite an early mishap that forced her to spin, Geving charged her way to sixth place in the crash infested event and started 22nd in the A-feature.

At the start of the A-feature, Geving placed her Pit Stop USA, Matt Cordeiro Enterprises, Tillett Tool #3x Maxim to the outside of the intimidating half mile track. With just two laps into the race she drove the high side of turns three and four and began advancing several positions until hardship broke out. Traveling through the fourth turn, Geving closed in on fellow rookie contender Miles Bishop. As Bishop attempted to avoid a slower car he slid sideways in Geving’s path, leaving her no route to avoid a collision that sent her hard into Bishop and eventually upside down with a significant amount of damage to both machines.

“I did everything I could to miss him but I just had no place to go,” said Geving, who walked away from the incident with only a bruised knee. “My team has a lot of work to do this week for Quincy but they are the best . We’’ll put this one behind us and hope for a better finish this weekend.”

After finishing in the 21st position following Saturday’s crash, Geving will head to American Valley Speedway in hopes of improving on her 11th place position in the Civil War point standings, a position that went unchanged despite the accident as a number of drivers fell victim to Calistoga’s treacherous ways.

American Valley Speedway is located on the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds and at 3/8 of a mile in length is the second largest dirt track in California, behind Calistoga. The Chicko Motorsports team will travel north one day early to participate in the pre race practice session on Friday evening and the inaugural Superior Hydraulics racers barbecue that evening.

“I’m looking forward to Quincy,” added Geving. “I have never raced there but I have heard a lot about it. It’s a really neat setting like Calistoga and it’s a fast track. Hopefully I can get a top finish for my team.”
