Crash ends Kaeding’s Calistoga Cup bid

By Gary Thomas

Calistoga, CA – June 15, 2008…A mid-race collision on the front stretch ended Bud Kaeding’s hopes of a good finish at the annual Calistoga Cup this past Saturday night at the Calistoga Speedway half-mile. The 28 year-old racer sat at the helm of the Werbach Motorsports, Los Gatos Construction Company No. 20 for the night of Civil War 360 Series competition at the historic Calistoga Speedway.

The event at the Napa County Fairgrounds track saw Kaeding qualify 10th fastest in the 38 car field before finishing one spot out of a transfer in his heat race, forcing him to run the B-main. A marathon semi then occurred and even featured a fuel stop before a lap had been completed due to an inordinate amount of caution laps being run. The Campbell veteran passed father Brent for the lead early on when the racing finally got underway and led the remaining laps for the victory.

By winning the B-main Kaeding got his time back and started 10th in the field during the 20 lap feature. He was on the move right from the get go and had gotten up to the top five when contact with another car sent him into the front straightway water barrels putting an end to the night. It was a tough way to cap off the event as he showed speed in the main event and looked to be moving forward right as soon as the incident occurred.

This coming week will find Kaeding head for one of the biggest sprint car events on the west coast as he makes the trek to the 37th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at the Skagit Speedway in Alger, Washington.

Last season saw him compete at the event aboard the Rudeen Racing No. 26 and charge from the rear of the field to finish in the 10th position on Saturday night. This year Kaeding will be behind the wheel of the BK Motorsports No. 29 as he attempts to take home the $25,000 grand prize for winning Saturday’s 40 lap A-main event.

The Dirt Cup will go green on Thursday evening with the opening round of prelim action and will be followed by another prelim on Friday, before Saturday’s grand finale that utilizes points from the first two night’s to set-up the starting grids. The total purse for the event is a whopping $150,000 and pays at least $1,200 to just start Saturday’s main event. More info on the 37th Dirt Cup presented by Camping World RV can be found at
