Choose your routes wisely to get to Huset's.  I won't make it up there this Friday because every road out of Cedar Rapids to Sioux Falls is closed unless I go the really long way around and I'm just not up to it.  I'd say we had a shot except we're looking at even more rain today and tomorrow.  We're evacuating everywhere around here.  It sucks.  The river through downtown Cedar Rapids overflowed its banks as of a couple of hours ago, Quaker Oats parking lot is flooded, they're shutting down bridges left and right while kicking people out of their homes.  Everyone is getting sent out to sandbag downtown.  But we made the national news!

Sad that we can have two 200 year floods in 15 years since we turned the flood control over to the Corps of Engineers.

Only one way to describe them FAILURE.

Let's just hope the bridge on 14 holds up and I can make it to Knoxville on Saturday.

And, yes that was me on that nice, red Case IH headed through town.

Here in Cedar Rapids they are calling it the 500 year flood plain. Any place that has been ever flooded in the last 500 years, on records, is expected to flood. I had one HELL of a time getting to work today. I am not sure how i am even to get across the river at all at this point.

I don't even know what roads to take to get to Knoxville from Cedar Rapids. I haven't read the reports on the Skunk river.

The Skunk is down around 14 since Monday/Tuesday, but who knows after the newest rainfall last night? It does have a ways to go to make the highway and a lot of floodplain to use there...

The only way i can get across the Cedar is to take the interstate. It is backed up like all s**t. My girlfriend lives just outside down town on the other side of the river. Should be fun for the next few weeks. Downtown has been shut down. Power off, gas off and water off. Her power just went off this morning with that storm. Hope it is on soon cause she has 3 kids. Otherwise I have some house guests for the evening.

It is my day off and I'm going to head to the SE side and help my Chef's mom sandbag her house. This better get me employee of the month.

At least business has picked up for me. We have a full hotel. All business men coming to town have canceled but just as fast people from in town or from the Crown Plaza downtown have booked it up. While business' are closing but my work was crazy last night. People weren't coming in to work, for good reasons, so I was helping in almost all departments. Crazy stuff this Iowa Weather.

yes smartass, I understand the Corps is not in control of the weather, I am not so stupid however as to believe that opening of a gate on Saylorville Lake and allowing 6 feet of water out of the lake in a few short hours required brains.

The lake is about 60 miles long and to let 6 feet of flood water to accumulate, then let it all go at once is damn near criminal.

If they let 6 feet of water out of Saylorville what will that do to Red Rock dam? Either way 1 of the dams is going to have the water weight on it. So then Red Rock has to let out more water. Who gets to make the choice which dams get all the water and what towns are left flooded? Let water out at dam A and these towns are flooded. Otherise if not these towns are flooded...Who gets to make the choices for nature and who's homes get flooded in what town?

when the HUGE expense of building the dams on the Des Moines River were expended, the purpose of relocating several towns and hundreds of people was for FLOOD control.

The reservoirs were to catch and slowly release fast accumulating flood water.

The recreation people came in, the Corps seemed to change their mission and the lake levels were no longer emptied during the winters.

When huge rains come now, the reservoirs are already full for the benefit of boaters.

When they opened 6 feet of flood gates and allowed the lake to lower 6 feet all at once seems almost criminal. One must remember that dam is located just North of downtown Des Moines and all of that water must run right through the center of the city.

So far,the sandbags seem to be holding thank goodness.

You are right, Knoxville is just a little way down the river, so it is next, and I suppose they will let out enough Red Rock water all at once to flood Ottumwa next.

Lets all hope that the Corps of Engineers don't kill people with their mis management.

To make Red Rock they had to flood the town of Red Rock. My dad has a whole book on the towns history. I guess at one time Red Rock was going to be the state capitol. Now it sits at the bottom of the Mile long bridge north of Knoxville. Good book to read.

I just drove up by the damn, and looking at pictures from '93, it's about 75 feet from where it was then. Although the flood gates are open and flowing fast. There's about 3-4 feet of pillars showing on the mile long bridge. It's quite a site to see to say the least.

My guess is that it will be a couple more days until the full efect of the Saylorville mismanagement will make its way to Knoxville.

Last wweek when going to Knoxville, the water was a long way below the bridge, but still very high up the limestone on the sides of the hills, with the wiest yet ti cine,

Let's hope that this is less painful than 1993.
