wet rag? hell how about methanol daiquiris! or daiquiri de ethanol for all you greenies lol. hey guys i am not trying to be the end all authority on the subject. like my first post stated, i have my story and i'm stick'in to it. as far as exploding, i should have used the term "less volatile than gas" as methanol has a lower flash point. i am always open to being shown i am mistaken, it just takes a hell of a lot more than that for me to admit it. lmao.

If Donnie Schatz did not have an explosion at the Gold Cup a couple years ago, at least he had one hell of a fast accelerating fire, and without the guts of Brent Kaeding, a fatal fire.

donny's car landed on top of the pit lane wall with the tail tank and basically scraped a hole in the tail tank sliding along the wall. in my opinion, i think the rear nerf sent off sparks that lit the fuel off. in the video i believe you can see the fuel come spraying out just before it lights off. it did not explode.

Right or Wrong! If I am on fire covered with methanol feel free to pour all the water you want on me.

if i remember correctly thy used every fire extinguisher at the track on mike Sargent's super-modified (from then on known as crispy critter lol)at baylands and then put the fire out with the water truck as the Fremont ca fire department was coming threw the pit gate with a truck load of water-----and if I'm not mistaken i do believe that t-w-o can tell a story or two about that night

well since you mentioned it... i was in the infield just out of turn 2 when mike and sammy went down the back chute. sammy was just lapping mike. it was lap 13. i started running towards turns 3 and 4 when i saw mike do his little wiggle than meant he was gettin ready to haul 'er in. i watched mike enough to know when to start runnin. well the front axle broke on the right side just as mike had 'er slid in there pretty hard and the thing started roll'in and flip'in like crazy. i got to the bottom of turn 3 and 4 before the fire started. as a car drove by, blow'in flames out the exaust, it lit the fuel off that had run down the track. scott ludorff and milen garrett were also involved. i think a nerf punched a hole in mikes tank, rupturing the bladder. i started to try to cross the track but cars were still going by and an official grabbed me and would not let me go. as the fire started going i shook loose and made it across the track. mike was just coming out of the car and the fire was going pretty good. he was covered in fuel up to his knees as far as i could see and his legs were on fire. i had dropped the container of water i had with me for him to drink from on reds when i started running. (it figures). i remember just dropping down and wiping my hands down his legs and transfering the fuel and fire from him to my hands and to the ground. lol. no burns on me or anything, just kind of squeegied it off onto the ground till someone else came to help put it out. the fire crew was too busy trying to put out the fuel on the track and trying to fight their way up the track to the fire to be of any use. they emptied their extinguishers in all the wrong places as the cars burned. it was turned into more than a methanol fire as the tires started burning and the paint and the upholstry and anything else that could burn. i remember just walking back through the infield to the pits as the thing was still burning. gary nelson bought the car and ran the "crispy critter". ah, the good 'ol days.

I was standing less than 15 feet from the scene of the accident and felt the heat of the fire.

Trust me, I have not only viewed the clip many times, I have used frames from it for projects on behalf of the participants.

That car was completly engulfed in flames before it was 5 feet from the wall. I believe the brake rotor to be the source of ignition.

In all honesty that was more than just a pinhole in the fuel tank, I would guess from seeing it that your arm would have fit into it.

We can all be thankful of Brent Kaeding for saving Donnie and the fire crew for knocking down the fire before it spread to the rescue crews.

Good fire crew or not, Brent saved Donnie from years of recovery time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UH0x_Sh3iDA i don't recall anyone including me refer to schatz's tank having a pinhole in it. i agree with you that it tore a heck of a hole in the tank. i had thought that i saw some vid from a different angle that showed the fuel spray as the car hit the wall.
