Andy Gregg runs 11th at Civil War Fair race in Chico

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – May 27, 2008…Andy Gregg and the Guts Racing team made the haul to Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway this past Sunday night for the fourth race of the California Civil War Series season and turned in an 11th place finish in the feature, despite having to go to the rear of the field following an early race spin.

Going into Sunday night’s event Gregg sat seventh in the Civil War Series standings and looked to make up ground at a track he finished third in points at last season. The special Sunday show was run in conjunction with the annual Silver Dollar Fair and saw a huge crowd on hand to witness the evening’s racing.

The track surface at the Silver Dollar Speedway bullring dried out a little faster than usual and an early draw for qualifying was definitely beneficial. Gregg went out third in the order and his fastest lap of 12.534 was good enough to place the Myers & Sons Drywall, Dale Miller Plumbing Maxim fourth fastest out of 48 cars.

Gregg then started outside the third row in the night’s final heat race and spent much of the early stages trying hard to get into the fourth and final transfer spot. “The Hurricane” gave it his all as he charged around the thick and treacherous cushion before putting himself into fourth with a handful of laps remaining.

Just after that however, a yellow appeared and forced him to go back to fifth, but Gregg was able to get back up to fourth a short time later until disaster struck on the backstretch. While Gregg was running in the fourth and final transfer spot another car slid into him, which broke the front end on the Guts Racing No. 16x and forced him into running the B-main. In the 12 lap contest Gregg got the jump on the field and led the entire distance to pick up the victory and transfer into the main event.

The surface had slicked off more and more for the feature and the Placerville driver lined up in the fifth row for the 30 lap race. Gregg hung in around the top 10 early on, but caught the cushion after a number of laps were completed and came to a stop relegating him to the rear of the field. He restarted and was able to solider on to bring the Circle Racing Wheels, Comstock Mortgage No. 16x home in the 11th position.

After the night of racing Gregg dropped one spot in the points and will look to rebound when the California Civil War Series next competes on June 14th at the Calistoga Speedway half-mile. Despite dropping a spot Gregg is still only 31 points back of the lead in the tightly contested series standings.

This weekend will find Gregg and the Guts Racing team bring out the 410 car for the first time since April 11 as the Golden State Challenge Series will compete at the Placerville Speedway on Saturday. During the last GSC stop at the high-banked track in March Gregg qualified second fastest and brought home an eighth place finish in the 30 lap feature. He’ll be trying hard for his first GSC win at his home track this Saturday night.
