“Salute to Indy” at Thunderbowl Raceway adds another Kaeding to the mix

By Gary Thomas

Tulare, CA – May 22, 2008…The second annual “Salute to Indy” at the Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway will get more exciting this Sunday night as veteran Tim Kaeding of San Jose will throw his name into the mix for the $500 bonus to the highest finishing winged sprint car driver at the event.

Kaeding will come into the USAC/CRA "Salute to Indy" this Sunday night fresh off his second career victory in the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial last Saturday at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. “TK” drove the Tom Rolfe Racing, Lucas Oil Products No. 10 into the lead with just 10 laps left in the feature and proceeded to hold off a hard charging Roger Crockett at the finish.

So far on the season Kaeding has won a total of four main events, including a thriller at the Thunderbowl Raceway on April 26. His other two starts in Tulare this year have brought finishes of second and fourth at the 1/3 mile clay oval. In the past the 29 year-old has experienced much success at the Thunderbowl including wins at the Trophy Cup and the National Sprint Tour finale in 2006, as well as a World of Outlaws victory in February of ’07.

In his career Kaeding has made limited starts without the wing but has had a lot of bright runs in those starts. Last season he tied with Robert Ballou for the Sprint Bandits TnT Midwest Swing title and also led much of the main event during the Saturday portion of the Oval Nationals at the Perris Auto Speedway. The former King of California also made a wingless 410 start at the Thunderbowl in April of ’04 while driving for Central Valley car owner Dennis Roth.

An extra $1,500 is also on the line for the top five highest finishing winged sprint car drivers thanks to Central, CA companies KRC Safety, Sharp Insurance and Elite Landscaping. The payoff for the bonus will be: $500 for the highest finisher, $400 for the second, $300 for the third, $200 for the fourth and $100 for the fifth.

T. Kaeding will be one of the many drivers on hand Sunday night, which will also include brother Bud Kaeding, Cory Kruseman, Mike Spencer, Blake Miller, Danny Sheridan, Peter Murphy and more. The front gate will open at 5pm Sunday night with reserved grandstand tickets costing $18 and general admission bleacher seats $15. More info can be found at

The Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway is located at the Tulare County Fairgrounds on the corner of Bardsley and K Streets in Tulare.

Just a note about the race in Tulare. The Zanzabuku Sports Lounge in Lakewood, CA. is posting a $500 to be distributed to the top four USAC/CRA drivers in Sunday's main event. The sports bar is the sponsor of last year's series champion Tony Jones and the Alexander Racing Team. $200 will go to the top finishing driver with USAC/CRA, with $150 going for second, $100 for third and $50 to the top USAC/CRA driver finsihing fourth. It should be a great night of traditional sprint car racing and should serve as a prelude to this year's Lou Vermeil Classic at Calistoga. With both Tim and Bud Kaeding and Peter Murphy entered the race should be a good one.

Hey no problem! I'll probably be hanging up in the booth with George like I usually do. Might be able to kick back during the night for a change though. Smile

California is once again becoming a hotbed for memorable sprint car races and big name drivers. I may not have always been a huge BK fan, but I will say with all sincerity that like his father Bk is one hell of a race car driver. I use to see him take off the wing and run with the best at Ascot in both sprints and midgets. His Kids are just like the old man. They will race just about any type of car and always seem to be in the hunt at the end. I really hope that Brent and both his boys show up for the Vermeil Classic at Calistoga. It would be fitting if a Kaeding still held the track record at the end of the weekend. Good luck to all of them this weekend.

Don't forget about Tim and Bud's grandfather - the great Howard Kaeding - who was a legend at the old San Jose Speedway. I know he won't be racing at Tulare, but I bet he could still hang in there if he wanted to.

As for the $$$$ being raised for the top finishing Nor-Cal drivers, just make out the check to TK now. For the few non-wing events he has raced, he has done very well. I present his finishes in last years "Sprint Bandit" races in the mid-west as examples.

Not so fast Tiger, Bud may have something to say about that. Had to say that John, Ha !!! BK has been One Dialed Redneck too.Going to be a Barn Burner,Spencer, Sheridan, Jones, Severnson and a Bunch more. Is Superman going to be there? He was pretty dominate in the previous SCRA Days.

It would be great if Rickie Gaunt (Superman) made the trip to Tulare. I hear that he is very involved with his young son's racing career, but who knows. He usually drives for the Gardner racing team.

Agreed Bud would have a say so. I was kind of coming from the mind set that Bud was USAC while TK was GSC. Guess Bud could be either huh? LOL
