410s (26 Cars)
Welcome Mat
To the 4 NOSA drivers who raced; Nick Shirek (11), Chris Shirek (1s), Casey Mack (8), and Lou Kennedy, Jr. (21K). Wade Nygaard (9N) also back after a week hiatus.
MIA
The Dude, Barstad #1 in the 410 class, Matthew Reed from last week, Sather (reportedly was racing tonight), Zomer, Robert Bell
Time Trials (1 lap each)
During hot laps, Dobmeier (13) had engine/ignition woes and decided to roll out the backup car instead of trying to fix the problem. The Knoxville car was very fast all night.
Track did not have a lot of moisture to it and it was best to go out early. Chuck McGillivray (101) and Longhair (12L) didn't get a time in. Nygaard and Jody Rosenboom (6) did not get a full lap in. Henderson (D1) set quick time with a 11.180 at 120.571 MPH and the rest of the drivers making the invert through 18th: Cressman (56), Peters (57x), Dobmeier, Jones (9M), Bakker (11x), Kennedy Jr., Runge (28), Mack, Schliemann (4), Meyer (1w), Garner (40), DeWall (16), C. Shirek, Jeffrey (12), Miller (24M), Winters (23w). Alley (22) was the only one to try to run the low line and his time suffered as he was 21st.
Time Trials Grade: C- with the track fading away with the hint of rubber down to come later on in the night.
Heats (Top 6 Inverted from TT, Top 6 to the A with Top 4 Inverted in the A)
Heat 1 Finish: Garner, Jeffrey, Bakker, Peters, Mack, Nygaard
Heat 2 Finish: Schliemann, DeWall, Dobmeier, Henderson, Ballenger (2D), Miller
Heat 3 Finish: Winters, Cressman, Runge, Meyer, Bickett (17B), C. Shirek
Heat Grade: A-; the track was very racey for the heats as there was a lot of passing going on for the slick track. All about momentum for this night and you could get it either running the bottom or carefully maneuvering on the thin cushion up top.
B Feature (Top 2 Tag the A)
Starting Order: Vogelaar (33), Kennedy, N. Shirek, Alley, Jones, McGillivray, Rosenboom (DNS), Lambertz (DNS)
Finish: Alley and Vogelaar transferred on as a couple of veterans in Vogelaar and McGillivray battled the entire race for the final transfer.
B Feature Grade: B; Alley checked out and the good battle for the last transfer spot.
A Feature (25 Laps)
Starting Order: 1w 4 28 11x 13 57x 56 D1 40 16 12 23w 2D 8 17B 9N 24M 1s 22 33
Initial start was good and it was Meyer taking the lead on the high side with others in tow. Most of the eyes were up front for the battle ensuing in the top 5 but Winters was flying on the high side as well as most were on the bottom or middle. Starting 13th he took the 23w around an assortment of cars including the former WoO regular Henderson. All this being done presumably with a 360 (need some verification!) against the big iron 410s in the class. The track started to take major rubber from the Hoosiers about 8-10 laps in and everyone was going the same speed, hugging the bottom for the last 15 laps. Dobmeier was still getting under cars and made it up to 2nd to challenge Meyer for the win but Meyer wouldn't let it happen as he won his 15th career 410 feature at Huset's. The feature paid $3,500 to win with the extra grand coming from Dollar Loan Center. GREAT to see Chad back in victory lane as no one deserves it more than him with everything he's been through the last few years. Here's to hoping a few more this year to the 1w crew! He led all 25 laps.

A Feature Grade: C; even though the track laid rubber, Winters was the excitement early with the passing. After rubber was laid, it was all up to Meyer and if he would make any big mistakes, which he didn't.
360s (17 cars)
Good action upfront early as Eric McGillivray was holding off Trisha Underberg and Kevin Flowers. He continued to hold the lead when Rosenboom got up to 2nd and he held him off as well for the victory on a pretty racey track at the time. He led all 18 laps and it was his 4th career 360 feature at the track.
FOAW: Gonna have to split it with Dobmeier who was passing on the rubber down and Winters who was coming forward early passing a ton of cars with that 360 (again assuming it's a 360 with his TT times). Would have been interesting to see what he could have done had the track not laid rubber.
VIP: Was pretty empty tonight without the presence of Wertz. Hopefully he can get race #1 in next week if the Dude does come back. BT24 wants to keep being mentioned in the Report, but this might be the last week he does. The yellow hat on the infield MIA as well.
WTF: Track conditions for the A. I know it was hot, windy, and low humidity yesterday but today was beautiful with 70 degrees, not a lot of wind, and humidity in the air. It woulda been a helluva track had it held on for another 15+ laps, but it just couldn't take much more.
"Home of the Professionals" Moment of the Night: We finally got 2 tow trucks on the infield and the scoreboard was working for the first night as well! It looked like the track should get some work during intermission, but didn't get touched for the first time all year during intermission.
Head Scratcher: Alley during time trials going low for his 1 lap. Love how the guy races and runs a team, but he'll hopefully learn not to do that again and to run the high side during qualifications. Also Cressman running 8th on the last lap and spinning out by himself.
Thumbs Up: To Chad getting back in victory lane
Thumbs Down: Rubber down races suck…
Stat of the Night: Winters 12th to 7th as the hard charger.

Winters does have a 360 in, and yes he was fast as h*ll with those guys. He really looked good.

Big J I wouldn't hold my breath on a Wertz appearence next weekend. I think a weekend in the holy city of the BEARS (Chicago) sounds like more fun than the home of the....

What track prep. There was dust blowing off the tires in time trials. I think the Rube's need to spend more time and effort in track prep than they do at the Flandreau Casino. Good job Chad Meyers, much deserved win.

After attending races there for over 40 years in many capacities its sad to see it detoriate steadily in the past 3 years. I was always told if you don't tell people what needs improving how are they going to know, that is if they care.

Dang, likely the closest definition ever of the over-used but virtually non-existant phrase. Some day it will actually happen and if it ever happens outside of the Grove write my obit, thanks! Take It Easy....

I mentioned it last week Bill W and I guess I'll have to keep mentioning that WoO victory at Wilmot '06 that actually happened on his first race at the track.

Sounds like after Saturday night in K'ville, Dunkins went to Husets to get that track ready. Sad to see our first dry weekend and two tracks failed to fill a water truck!

yeah, since the phase FOAW was invented, it has not only been proven TRUE but RE-PROVEN NEARLY EVERY YEAR since the phrase was coined.
see Mark Smith (beat the WoO the night the phrase was coined), Doug Esh, Brian Leppo and Mike Erdley for further explaination. Dobmeier (spelling?) received honors along the way as well.
nowhere in the process was the locality limited to POSSE SOIL...but it sure has rubbed the velvet the wrong way with those filled with ANTI POSSE VENOM! (see MSPN's posts for real life evidence)

Methinks all those wins were at the Grove where it's all about the track anyway. All of those guys have been lapped traffic since if they did get out of the B. As far as those guys being competitive somewhere else, that's pretty funny. Take It Easy....

The BRR Hard Luck Award goes to the "local" Bass Pro Shop, here in Harrisburg. A new store in a new market with money invested in advertising gets screwed yet again. I am not interested in fishing, but I hope their trolling motors are more reliable than the multi-million dollar anchors. In a year where the condition of "local racing" is on every tongue, we see a split in series loyalty with a promise of "taking sprint car racing to a new level". Tonight pretty much summed it up, the new level must be provided by someone OTHER than the RACERS. The racers have only one possible contribution: quality performance. We always see locals "Pack It In" when they are out of equipment, but when you travel the country on a large budget, FANS and SPONSORS expect to see an ATTEMPT TO RACE. It is a sad day to see sprint car drivers moth the light of Nascrap just to collect the guaranteed signing bonus. Yes, a NEW level is about to be unveiled and NEW could be better. But do remember that NEW can be beaten to the delight of the fans. With the current state of sprint car racing, there is no better place to be than POSSE SOIL. |
