5/3/08

Knoxville Raceway

WoO

47 410s

34 360s

410s

Donny Schatz (2nd car out to time) set quick time over the field with a time of 14.778 seconds. One lap of qualifying format was used. Jason Meyers (33rd car out) was second quick, followed by Danny Lasoski (25th), Steve Kinser (1st), Craig Dollansky (16th), Kerry Madsen (4th), Stevie Smith (23rd), Sam Hafertepe Jr. (9th), Daryn Pittman (34th) and Joey Saldana (47th). Brooke Tatnell flipped hard in hot laps after something broke and was done for the night. He was uninjured. Travis Cram also failed to get a time in and scratched for the night.

Heat one (started): 1. Schatz 15 (4) 2. Pittman 21 (2) 3. Dollansky 2 (3) 4. Lucas Wolfe 5w (1) 5. Brian Brown 21x (6) / 6. Mark Dobmeier 13 (8) 7. Skip Jackson 2x (5) 8. Lynton Jeffrey 12 (7) 9. Seth Brahmer 13v (10) 10. Mike Moore 69 (11) 11. Bob Weuve 19w (12) 12. Rager Phillips 9P (9)

Pittman grabbed the early lead before Phillips flipped in turn four on lap two. He was uninjured. Pittman led Schatz, Wolfe, Brown, Dollansky and Jackson back to green flag racing. The lead pair dueled back and forth before Schatz took over the lead for good on lap six of the eight lapper, with the top two qualifying for the dash. Jackson and Brown raced past Dollansky on lap one, but he battled back nicely to third.

Heat two (started): 1. Saldana 9 (2) 2. Meyers 14 (4) 3. Madsen 55 (3) 4. Tim Shaffer 6 (1) 5. Jason Sides 7s (8) / 6. Brandon Wimmer 7TW (10) 7. Jeff Mitrisin 47 (6) 8. Justin Henderson D1 (7) 9. Ricky Logan 10 (9) 10. Toni Lutar 4x (11) 11. Clint Garner 40 (5) DNS - Brooke Tatnell 11AU

Saldana led from the beginning. Meyers quickly moved into second, looking strong on a cushion that was about 3/4 of the way up the track. Madsen battled early with Mitrisin after falling out of a transfer for a time. Garner departed on lap five. Lutar exited on lap seven after coming to a stop. On the restart, Saldana led Meyers, Shaffer, Sides and Madsen. Madsen picked off a car in each of the last two laps for third.

Heat three (started): 1. Jac Haudenschild R19 (1) 2. Tony Bruce Jr. 18 (2) 3. Danny Lasoski 5 (4) 4. Stevie Smith 19 (3) 5. Chad Hillier 5c (8) / 6. Kraig Kinser 20 (7) 7. Davey Heskin 56 (6) 8. Tony Shilling 47T (10) 9. Kaylene Verville 01 (9) 10. Terry McCarl 24 (5) DNS - Kaley Gharst 7K, Travis Cram 17G

Haudenschild led the distance looking strong. The only stoppage came for a lap two Verville spin. McCarl surged as high as third, but was puking smoke most of the way. Things gave way for him on lap seven while running fourth.

Heat four (started): 1. Chad Kemenah 8K (1) 2. S. Kinser 11 (4) 3. Dusty Zomer 5z (2) 4. Hafertepe Jr. 15H (3) 5. Shane Stewart 83 (5) / 6. Billy Alley 22 (6) 7. Josh Schneiderman 49 (8) 8. Calvin Landis 70 (9) 9. Jake Peters 57x (10) 10. Bronson Maeschen 96 (7) 11. Ryan Anderson 71R (11)

Kemenah led flag to flag. Zomer looked like he had something for the leader, and registered 12th quick even after hopping the berm in turn two in time trials, but a plume of smoke appeared around lap three and he looked underpowered in holding onto third the rest of the way.

C main (started): 1. Wimmer (1) 2. Shilling (2) / 3. Peters (3) 4. Ry. Anderson (7) 5. Weuve (8) 6. Verville (6) 7. Moore (4) 8. Lutar (5) DNS - Gharst, Tatnell, Cram

Wimmer dominated the 8 lapper. Moore was in tow until lap six when he bowed out, handing the second transfer to the B to Shilling. Lutar stopped on the track and exited on lap five.

Dash (started): 1. S. Kinser (1) 2. Haudenschild (3) 3. Schatz (4) 4. Saldana (2) 5. Pittman (6) 6. Dollansky (10) 7. Kemenah (8) 8. Meyers (7) 9. Lasoski (9) 10. Bruce Jr. (5)

S. Kinser led the duration in the race determining the starting five rows in the A main. Haudenschild was impressive in challenging for the lead, and Dollansky improved his stock the most moving up four spots in the 6 lapper.

B main (started): 1. McCarl (3) 2. Jackson (1) 3. Alley (6) 4. Henderson (8) / 5. K. Kinser (9) 6. Garner (2) 7. Logan (14) 8. Jeffrey (7) 9. Wimmer (15) 10. Schneiderman (12) 11. Landis (13) 12. Brahmer (16) 13. Maeschen (10) 14. Heskin (5) 15. Dobmeier (11) 16. Mitrisin (4) 17. Shilling (17) DNS - Phillips

Jackson took the early lead before a lap three caution for Mitrisin who spun out of third and a transfer on lap three. Jackson led McCarl, Henderson, Alley and Garner back to green flag racing in the 12 lapper. McCarl challenged Jackson for the lead, but smoke emanated from the 24 again right before a caution for Heskin who broke a stop and came to a rest on lap eight. Despite the smoking racecar, McCarl got by Jackson with two to go for the win. Garner and Alley had their own battle going on for the final transfer and exchanged slidejobs. Alley took over the spot for good with two to go, and then slid into third past Henderson on the last go-around.

A main (started): 1. Schatz (5) 2. Saldana (4) 3. Haudenschild (2) 4. S. Kinser (1) 5. Meyers (8) 6. Dollansky (6) 7. Pittman (5) 8. Madsen (11) 9. Lasoski (9) 10. Smith (12) 11. Kemenah (7) 12. Hafertepe Jr. (13) 13. Stewart (19) 14. K. Kinser (25, pr.) 15. Wolfe (15) 16. Sides (23) 17. Zomer (14) 18. Jackson (17) 19. Bruce Jr. (10) 20. Hillier (24) 21. Alley (21) 22. Henderson (22) 23. Landis (26, pr.) 24. McCarl (18) 25. Shaffer (16) 26. Brown (20)

The initial start in the 25 lapper saw Brown crowded into the turn one wall and break his front axel and other parts, ending his night. The next try saw Shaffer get over the turn one cushion, and take a hard right into the wall. He took a hard ride, but was uninjured. It was clean and green from there on out. S. Kinser opened up a sizable lead. The track was good lending to three grooves in turns one and two (bottom, middle, top) and a top and bottom in three and four. S. Kinser utilized a middle groove that had developed to lap cars. Schatz succeeded at keeping pace with the legend and pulled up on him in lapped traffic. He made his winning move around the high side of turns three and four on lap 18, and seemed to be on cruise control from that point on. His teammate K. Kinser was the hard-charger, moving up 11 spots to 14th after taking a provisional. McCarl bowed out on lap three with persistent mechanical issues, and Landis and Henderson also exited early.

360s

Heat one (started, *qualified for feature): 1. John Kearney 86 (1*) 2. Josh Higday 1GD (3*) 3. Gregg Bakker 11x (5*) 4. John Hall 7H (8*) 5. Brett Mather 54 (7*) 6. Alan Zoutte 33 (9) 7. Danny Heskin 6 (4) 8. Tyler Thompson 48 (6) DNS - Nate Van Haaften 3

Mechanical ills sidelined Van Haaften while in staging. Kearney raced out to an early lead in the 7 lapper, but Higday got under him on lap two. The pair battled with Kearney high and Higday low. Kearney shot around to take the lead for good on lap five in a good race. Bakker took third from J. Hall with two to go.

Heat two (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Dustin Selvage 7 (1*) 2. Jon Agan 4 (6*) 3. Frankie Heimbaugh 04 (4*) 4. Pete Crall 1 (9*) 5. Jason Eckard 2H (7) 6. Jake Leighty 1HD (5) 7. Dan Thornburg 57T (8) 8. Larry Pinegar II 44 (3) DNS - Eric Jobe 23

Selvage led the distance. Pinegar II retired early, as did Thornburg and Leighty. Agan moved up and looked fast.

Heat three (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Chuck Swenson X (8*) 2. Eric Vanderploeg 10 (2*) 3. Ryan Roberts 18 (6*) 4. Dave Hall 51 (3) 5. Matt Moro 2m (7) 6. Natalie Sather 94s (5) 7. CJ Houseman Y5 (4) 8. Mark Pace 31 (1)

Vanderploeg led early in the stout heat. By lap five, Swenson had worked from last to fourth when Pace came to a stop. Vanderploeg led D. Hall, Roberts, Swenson and Sather at the time. Two laps later, Swenson was taking the lead and pulling away. Roberts moved by D. Hall with two to go for third, while 2007 top five finishers D. Hall and Moro were sent to the B.

Heat four (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Joe Beaver 53 (6*) 2. Mike Houseman Jr. Y2 (2*) 3. Jesse Giannetto D1 (3*) 4. Bryan Dobesh 2D (5*) 5. Tom Lenz 8L (1) 6. Russ Hall 29 (8) 7. RJ Johnson 71 (7) 8. Jordan St. Arnold 7s (4)

Beaver catapulted to the lead by turn three on the first lap from outside row three and cruised to the win.

B main (started): 1. D. Hall (2) 2. R. Hall (6) 3. Moro (3) 4. Sather (8) / 5. Zoutte (4) 6. Thornburg (10) 7. Lenz (5) 8. Heskin (9) 9. Thompson (13) 10. Johnson (12) 11. St. Arnold (14) 12. Eckard (1) 13. Pace (15) 14. Van Haaften (16) 15. CJ Houseman (11) 16. Leighty (7) DNS - Pinegar II

Leighty elected to start at the rear. D. Hall led throughout the 12 lapper. The top four finishers had moved into those positions by lap five when CJ Houseman abruptly stopped on teh frontstretch and exited. The lead pack separated themselves from the rest of the pack, with the best racing between Moro and Sather for third.

A main (started): 1. Bakker (1) 2. Agan (4) 3. Higday (3) 4. Swenson (8) 5. Beaver (7) 6. Selvage (5) 7. Crall (9) 8. Mather (16) 9. Roberts (2) 10. Sather (20) 11. Heimbaugh (13) 12. Giannetto (14) 13. Houseman Jr. (11) 14. Vanderploeg (10) 15. R. Hall (18) 16. D. Hall (17) 17. Moro (19) 18. Dobesh (15) 19. J. Hall (12) 20. Kearney (6)

Kearney got into the wall on lap one and fell out of the 15 lapper. The event went non-stop, with Bakker maneuvering lapped traffic well. Agan won a mid-race battle with Higday for second and at one point pulled up on Bakker's bumper, but could not outlast him in traffic. Sather was the hard-charger, advancing 10 spots. J. Hall and Dobesh exited on lap 12.

geez 81 sprints at Knoxville - almost 50 for ASCS/WoW just to the south in Missouri. damn good night of sprint car racing for 2 different tracks relatively not that far apart. thats cool. I hope the 360 Nationals draw really good this year. I think they will.

410 feature was an exciting race full of passing from the front of the pack to back. I wouldn't call this one a "no passing parade" Schatz reminded me of a wild predator stalking it's prey and then making the "kill" Right now he has to be the odds on favourite for another Nationals title. He was just a methodical machine in going to the front. Great show all the way around ...Congrat to all .... cold but tolerable and not a hint of a rain cloud.

The Knoxville opener? Is this some kind of joke.....it's May for Christs sake!

Good to see Schatz get that monkey off his back.....and I'm not talking about McCarl either!

Do the #20 & the #15 even share information? Nothing against Kraig, however a provisional starter should NOT be eligible for the Hard Charger award.

Glad to see plenty of cars in the pits, now maybe the WoO can keep the rain away for the rest of the year. It sounds like the greatest show on dirt lived up to its name.

Not surprised that Schatz won. He and Saldana are still the ones to beat there in a WoO show. Glad to hear that Haud put up a good fight.

Nearly 50 cars @ LOS is a strong showing against K'Ville. Whoever said 360's suck should maybe re-examine their logic.

Great night of racing all around. Too bad Brooke crashed in hot laps.

Personally I do not care where a driver is from as long as I see good racing. If I owned a local car that was very competitive with the Outlaws I might brag about it. But I fail to see what a fan has to brag about if the locals run well with the WoO as they have nothing to do with the teams being able to do that.

Ease up on the local boys...like someone said it's May for Christ sake and this was their first race of the year....except for Alley & Brown....the rest haven't hardly turned a lap since September last year ...that's 8 months

Great night of Wide Open high adrenaline racing! Passing all night long, Records broken, Noboby hurt, Weather wasn't as bad as I expected. Nice kick off to the season.

That sideways deal with Kraig Kinser coming off of 4 was pretty scary watching the dude that just cleared driving underneath of him.

Good action all night long, The only spoiler was to see Schatz get by Haud & Kinser. I would have liked to see one of those 2 guys win it.

Tough luck for Brooke Tatnell & the "Cram Man". Better luck to come to you hopefully.

LOS had 47 360's and about 18 305's They got to run 30 laps and we got out of their by 11:00. It was a great show. I'm glad Knoxville had a good night also. Almost forgot about the mini sprints they were good to.

BRR, here we go again. It was actually 11 locals in the A, 6 of them decided to leave the porch in the last few years.

Where was Hindi?

Too bad for Brooke, kind of interesting with all new equipment they did'nt'nt have a spare car to bring out for those valuable 100+ points.

Turn one destroyed another new Casey's car. Thankfully not as bad as the last time, but I'm sure Shaeff isn't very fond of K'ville's first corner.

Once they got the A started after a couple of wrecks, man that feature was fast!

The track was as good as can be expected, thinking that we were going to get heavy rains again Friday night that missed us. Dunkins had the water truck out most of the day Saturday.

Decent crowd, with the sub-comfortable temps. I did see some people in Dingus last Saturday from Ankeny that were very disappointed that is was postponed, although the TV and radio ads were still playing on Saturday, a day after it was announced. We probably lost a few casuals that previously got burned.

After the races, everything felt right with the world. I never thought in the 6 years of livin in K'ville, that a late start to the season would bring people down as much as it did. Attitudes were definitely uplifted after the checkers on a good night.

Oh yeah, and Jac reminded me of how he was in '98 the other night, the year his worst finish at Knoxville was 2nd. (A main of Nats.) Glad to see it!
