Tuesdays with TMAC – Back in the Neighborhood!
(Bill W) April 22, 2008 – Sprint car driver, Terry McCarl, will be on familiar ground this weekend, as he returns to the tracks he made his name on. The World of Outlaws series will invade Huset's Speedway south of Brandon, South Dakota on Friday and the Knoxville Raceway in Iowa on Saturday. TMAC holds twelve track titles (six apiece) between the two facilities and has won over 120 times. He ranks first on the all-time wins list at Huset's and fourth at Knoxville.
The Altoona, Iowa veteran holds impressive records at a number of tracks, but none compares to his numbers at Huset's. He has won 44% of the feature races he has run there, and has finished in the top five an unheard of 82% of the time. "It's a real demanding racetrack for the driver, and such a great place," says TMAC of Huset's. "The fans are so awesome up there. People may think I don't like them, because so many boo me, but they're my favorite. They really have a lot of passion for the sport up there. I think that's cool. Of course, most of my sponsors are from the area too, and we love to run there for them."
McCarl chased his father Lenard as he raced in the 1970's. "When I was young, my dad would go to North Starr Speedway up in Minnesota and places like that," he remembers. "No offense to Knoxville, but if you go other places, the fans seem to be more appreciative of outside guys coming in, because they don't get to see them all the time. Knoxville fans are pretty spoiled in that respect. Even when I was young, we got to see the badasses coming into Knoxville all the time. So it's nice to go to places like Huset's in that respect."
TMAC always endures his share of boos at the banked 3/8 mile facility. "When I first went up there, I was the guy trying to dethrone Lasoski, I was kind of the favored son at the time. That changed over the years!" Win enough, and you'll get booed for it, win every week and you'll receive what TMAC gets in South Dakota. Incredibly, he holds at least one feature win at Huset's in each of the last thirteen years! His last three WoO event finishes have been a 3rd, a 1st and a 2nd there.
"The Sprint Car Capital of the World" will host the WoO on Saturday. TMAC was 5th in the Spring, 1st in June and 3rd in the Nationals at Knoxville Raceway in 2008 with the WoO. "We look forward to not only going to Knoxville, where we've run well the last few times out, but to just getting our season rolling and stop all this bad weather!" he says.
TMAC is currently sixth in the WoO points heading into his home tracks. "We're really running well with the Eagle Chassis and Don Ott power right now," he says. "It's too bad what happened at Eldora (ran out of fuel running third with a lap and a half to go), but we'll pick it up and keep going!"
WoO at 34 Raceway!
The World of Outlaws are coming to another of TMAC's favorite tracks, the 34 Raceway near West Burlington, Iowa on July 30, 2008. The race will be a prelude to the 10-day Southern Iowa Sprintweek. "The deal was finalized last Friday," says TMAC, who will have a hand in promotion. "What a great place that will be for an Outlaw show!"

Rick in Sioux Falls, SD asks: You've got to be excited about the World of Outlaws coming to Huset's three times. When you first started having success there years ago, what was the key?
TMAC Answers: I won the second feature I ever raced there, actually. Actually, we went there with Bob Vielhauer (#12x) in 1987. We ran third in the heat race behind Randy Smith and Todd Mack and the rains came. I didn't go back there until the following year, for a two-night show in my dad's car (#7x). We ran like 14th the first night, and my dad, who never chewed my ass about driving, chewed it that night all the way to the hotel. The next night I won. So I guess that was the key!

Today in TMAC History!
TMAC has won three Knoxville Raceway Season Openers in his career, and two of them came on this date. In 2000, he drove the Jensen Construction #55 from 17th and took the lead from Matt Moro on the final circuit to win over Matt, Jeff Mitrisin, Travis Cram and Kerry Madsen. In 2006, he came from the second row and survived an early duel with Skip Jackson to win over Skip, Madsen, Clint Garner and Shane Stewart.
