Andy Gregg battles back for 9th place finish in Placerville
By Gary Thomas
Placerville, CA - April 21, 2008…Despite a mid-race rollover Placerville’s Andy Gregg was still able to regroup and bring home a ninth place finish Saturday night during the third winged 360 sprint car point race at his home track.
Cold weather inundated the Northern California area on Saturday, but Gregg began the night warm as he timed in fourth quickest out of 30 cars and charged from sixth to pick up the victory in his heat race. With fast qualifier Colby Wiesz pulling the zero pill for the invert, it put the Guts Racing, Myers & Sons Drywall No. 16x on the outside of the second row for the 25 lap main event.
Early on the 28 year-old driver moved forward and began to challenge Wiesz for the lead after a handful of laps were completed. Gregg battled the No. 35 car for a couple laps before taking the lead and trying to distance himself from the rest of the field. While battling through lap traffic on the tenth circuit however, Gregg banged the cushion turn four and lost the lead.
Trying to rebound Gregg got back up on the wheel and attempted to charge back through the field, but a flip on the backstretch forced him to restart at the rear. The all-time 360 track record holder at the Placerville Speedway then proceeded to move back through the field to record a ninth place finish aboard the Dale Miller Plumbing, Circle Racing Wheels, Straight line Roofing Maxim.
Gregg and the Guts Racing team will return to the Placerville Speedway this coming Saturday April 26 for the fourth 360 point race of the season. Gregg goes into the night sitting in a tie for third in the track point standings, 19 behind current leader Colby Wiesz. This Saturday’s race will also be the final tune-up before the California Civil War Series invades the El Dorado County Fairgrounds track for the fifth annual Family Chevrolet Tribute to Al Hinds.
The Tribute to Al Hinds is set for May 3 and has become one of the biggest single night events for 360 sprint car racing in Northern California over the last few years. The winner of the nights 30 lap Civil War Series main event will take home a sweet $3,000. Last season Gregg charged from 20th to 7th in the event and will look to bring home the big money on May 3.
