Bud Kaeding records second straight top 5 in GSC competition
By Gary Thomas
Watsonville, CA – April 12, 2008…Returning to his home track of Ocean Speedway Saturday night, Campbell’s Bud Kaeding brought home his second consecutive Golden State Challenge Series top five finish. The 28 year-old was also coming off a runner-up result last Friday at the quarter-mile bullring and continued his recent string of success at the track.
Kaeding went into the evening sixth in the GSC point standings and looked to improve upon that at the Santa Cruz County Fairground facility. A lower than normal car count of 20 cars were on hand for the night of action in Watsonville and Kaeding timed in fourth quickest in qualifying aboard the BK Motorsports, Kaeding Performance Maxim.
The two-time and defending USAC Silver Crown Series champ then started fourth in his heat race, but charged into the lead after just one lap was completed. Kaeding proceeded to pull away from the field with ease, but after a handful of laps were run he got in the slick stuff and spun around in turn two.
He was able to keep the motor lit in the Alviso Rock No. 29 however, and continued on in third before getting around Shane Golobic for second with just a couple laps left. Kaeding crossed the stripe in second at the checkered to transfer into the dash where he unfortunately started from the very last position. The dash draw was very important on this night as the track was very difficult to make up ground on.
Kaeding finished sixth in the dash, which gave him a third row starting spot in the 30 lap feature and he was able to run a smooth 30 laps on the bottom to bring home a fifth place finish in the K & N Filters No. 29. It marked his third top five of the GSC season and second with the series at the track in two starts this year.
Next weekend will find Kaeding in action once again at the Ocean Speedway on Friday night for the second 360 point race of the season at the quarter-mile. He will be aboard the Werbach Motorsports No. 20 again looking to improve upon his second place finish a couple Friday’s back. Then on Saturday he’ll be in action with the Golden State Challenge Series at the Petaluma Speedway aboard the BK Motorsports No. 29.
