The #31 winged sprint car team from Newton motor sports kicked off their 2008 season at ocean speedway in the opening event of the Wright One 360 series. The team overcame early problems that caused them to miss their heat race where they were to start on the pole. That forced a mid pack start in the B main, and with the strong field of 32 cars that timed in the night was starting to look like a throw away. Not willing to let down their driver, the team lead by Gary Fugate, went to work changing gears, re-tuning the motor and selecting a setup that would hopefully help Jason on the tricky bottom lane track that the speedway was turning into on this night. The opening lap of the B main saw the determination that the 2007 rookie of the year had on not letting this be his last race of the night. Jason drove high into turns one and two and kept his momentum down the back chute to power to the bottom and start a charge to the front and a chance at one of the six transfer spots to the A main. With some great driving and some help by some yellows Jason not only secured an A main berth but did it by finishing 4th, good enough to get his qualifying time back for the A. Knowing they had dodged a bullet the team went to work preparing for the feature where Jason would line up 20th. The track had turned into a one lane wonder on the bottom with cars up on the inside berm fighting for position. Still Jason fought his way forward racing with both determination and patients into a top 10 spot at times with the likes of Keith day, Jason Sattler, and Brad Fur. The motor and chassis setups combined to cause Jason to remark after the race that he never pulled so many wheelies in his life. When the checkered flag fell and the dust had settled, Jason ended up 12th . That 12th felt like a top five considering the battle the team had to put up to get it. The team will now look forward to the next Wright One 360 series race at ocean on fri April 6, 2008. Jason has a web site in progress, www.newtonmotorsports31.com that will be updated to include reports, pics and video clips with help from www.cmpvideo2go.com
Although it is early in the year, ocean speedway is looking like the place to be for 360 sprint car racing with 32 cars timing in thanks to the insurgence of some central valley cars lead by race winner Tommy Tarlton. Congrats to the Tarlton team including our mate Paul Baines on the win. We hope to see you and the rest of the central valley contingent on hand through the year. Thanks to all who were on hand and to those who just couldn’t make it but wanted to. Hope you can for the next one.
