Bud Kaeding puts together consistent weekend

By Gary Thomas

Antioch, CA – April 5, 2008…Competing in a pair of events this past Friday & Saturday nights Campbell’s Bud Kaeding had his finest overall weekend of action of this early season. The two-time and defending USAC Silver Crown champ drove two different cars to a pair of top five finishes during the double-header weekend.

On Friday evening at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville Kaeding sat behind the wheel of the Werbach Motorsports, Los Gatos Construction Company No. 20. Last season he drove this car to a fourth place at Silver Dollar Speedway’s Fall Nationals and during his first night in the car this year, he timed in fourth fastest out of 32 cars. After a fourth place finish in his heat he drove a strong race in the feature to bring home a nice second place finish behind winner Tommy Tarlton.

Kaeding then got back into the usual BK Motorsports No. 29 and headed for the Antioch Speedway on Saturday night for the sixth round of the Golden State Challenge Series season. The 28 year-old went into the event sitting eighth in the point standings and looked to improve upon that at the tight bullring. He began the evening by timing in fifth quickest out of 25 cars on a night that saw his brother Tim break the track record. The surface was rather different for qualifying as it was dry, wet and a tad rough in various spots.

Strong winds during the day dried the track out considerably as the night went on though and the racing groove narrowed considerably. Kaeding started fifth in his heat race and drove forward to finish second, before lining up sixth in the dash and running fifth aboard the K & N Filters, Alviso Rock No. 29. The Antioch Speedway has a tendency to be tough to pass on come feature time, and this night was no different as the bottom was the place to be.

Kaeding settled into the fifth spot early on in the main event and ran there throughout a caution plagued 30 laps of racing. When starter Willie Williams waved the checkered flag just a couple minutes prior to curfew, the Angellos ATV Rental, Kaeding Performance Maxim sat in the fifth position. The top five result tied Kaeding’s best finish of the season and he’ll now move on to next weekend to try and put the No. 29 into victory lane for the first time in ’08.

The BK Motorsports team will get another event close to home next weekend as the Golden State Challenge 410 Winged Sprint Car Series heads for the Ocean Speedway on Saturday. When GSC last visited the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds bullring Kaeding brought home a fifth place finish in the main event.
