Geving caps off double duty weekend with hard charging second place run at Petaluma

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (4-5-08) – Following a challenging night and a sixth place finish in 410 sprint car action at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico Friday night, 16-year-old Alissa Geving of Penngrove, California, returned to Petaluma Speedway Saturday night to continue her campaign towards the 2008 All Pro point series title for 360 sprint cars. When the checkered flag flew at the conclusion of the 25-lap feature, Geving had concluded the night with an impressive second place finish. The feat was Geving’s second straight top three outing at her home track aboard the the Chick-O-Motorsports - Pit Stop USA #3x sprint car.

For the second straight week, Saturday’s event lacked timed qualifying and a pill draw was used to determine heat race line up positions. After a drawing a 45 pill in the process, Geving started the 8-lap heat race in the third row. Racing on a track that lacked much room for passing, Geving placed sixth in the preliminary event which placed her on the outside of the sixth row to start 12th in the 20-lap feature event.

Racing on a very fast, yet rough track surface, Geving once again used patience and poise to work her way towards the front while avoiding a number incidents that delayed the early laps of the event with multiple caution flags. Prior to the ninth lap Geving had already charged up to the fifth position and one lap later moved into the third position when top runners Art McCarthy and Roberto Kirby banged wheels entering the first turn. McCarthy went up on two wheels and came to a stop while Johnson drove to the pit area and the third position became Geving’s for the restart.

On the ensuing restart, race leader David Lindt Jr. charged ahead while Geving set her sights on the runner position held by veteran driver Rob Johnson. With just 12-lap complete Geving was putting pressure on on both Johnson and Lindt as a three-way battle developed for the lead in lapped traffic. Going to the low side of the track, Geving made several attempts to slide up underneath Johnson only to have Johnson close the door while Lindt powered ahead to more distant lead.

With the white flag waving, the battle for the second position was far from over in Geving’s eyes. Entering the third turn of the final lap Geving muscled to the inside of Johnson to instigate a drag race for the bridesmaid finish. The two raced side by side through turn four and brought the spectators to their feet with a photo finish, with Geving edging Johnson for the position.

“Saturday night was a blast. The A-main was basically all about staying out of trouble tonight,” said Geving. “That’s what I set my goal to be. I stayed clear of any accidents and with some effort and hangin in there I got second. I can’t wait to go to Placerville on Wednesday for the Civil War opener and back here to Petaluma for the Civil War again. I’m ready.”

After driving from 12th place into second, Geving was awarded the hard charger of the night award at Petaluma Speedway. This is the second consecutive week she has earned the honor that is presented to the driver that passes the most positions in the event.

Prior to Saturday’s stellar performance, Geving and the Chick-o-Motorsports Team ventured to Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico to compete in the Friday night Feather Falls Casino weekly 410 series. The evening presented its share of challenges for Alissa and the team but the end result was a sixth place finish among some of California’s finest drivers.

After having mechanical problems and technical difficulties with her transponder in qualifying, Geving was given a one-lap opportunity to clock in. The 2008 recipient of the Motorsports Press Association’s Paul Tyler Rising Star Award overcame the early night adversities and set fifth quick on the roster.

In heat race action the challenges returned when Geving was unable to reach the fourth position to secure a starting position for the A-feature and was forced to run in the semi-feature in an effort to transfer. It was in this event that Geving lived up to her newest nickname of the “Angel in Flames” as she lit up the track from the waving of the green flag. After passing California star Tyler Walker on the opening lap she led the entire 12-lap event to earn her qualifying time back for the A-feature.

Starting in the fifth row of the A-feature, Geving charged her way to a sixth place finish in the event, rolling in behind the likes of Tim Kaeding, Roger Crockett, Sean Becker, Andy Forsberg and Matt Mitchell.

“Friday night was awesome,” said Geving. “Eventhough we had some bad luck in the beginning I was happy to be alive on such a rough track. Just keeping up with those guys is a good accomplishment for me.”

Geving and the Chick-O-Motorsports crew will travel to Placerville Speedway in the Sierra Foothills this Wednesday night for “Wild Winged Wednesday” and the opening round the Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Sprint Car Series. Following her second ever appearance at Placerville, she will return to her home track of Petaluma series to compete in the series for its second round.”
