Zack West finishes two spots shy of making feature at Chico opener
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA – April 4, 2008…Competing in the opening Feather Falls Casino point race at Silver Dollar Speedway, Chico’s Zack West rebounded in the semi following a heat race crash to finish just two spots short of making the A-main.
The event on Friday night at the quarter-mile bullring saw 29 winged sprint cars show up to compete on GP Development night. West began his sophomore season of 410 winged sprint car competition during the night and he found himself on the front row of the evening’s third heat race. He fell into line second on the initial start but a caution for a stalled car appeared to require a complete restart.
The next start saw another yellow fly as race officials felt that the front row was not side by side, and both West and outside front row starter Colby Copeland were sent to the rear of the field. The Silver Dollar Speedway was extremely fast and sticky all night, but had developed some rough spots and it unfortunately bit West on lap six as he bicycled in turn two and got upside down.
The We St-ing Racing, Community Construction No. 14 was towed back to the pits and crew chief Lee Watson and the team went to work to repair the car for the B-main. After thrashing away West was able to get out for the 12 lap semi where he started from the fifth row. The youngster looked more comfortable in the B-main and he was able to move up a few spots to finish seventh, just two positions out of the feature aboard the Ing Excavation, Franklin Construction JEI.
West and We St-ing Racing team will return to Silver Dollar Speedway next Friday night for the rescheduled Tribute to Bill Brownell. It will mark the second Feather Falls Casino point race and will pay $3,000 to win the 410 sprint main event.
