You claim Terry McCarl as the greatest promoter of recent times - now don't get me wrong, Terry throws a heck of a party, and the FRC is one of my favorite races of the year, but would I take my KID there? Not on your life... so tell me, who do you want to promote to? Kids? Party animals? Newbies? Tried and true lifelong fans? The key is you have to be able to give every single one of those groups something and still allow them to live in harmony with each other.
Your arguments of start times and end times are weak at best - concerts, football, basketball, NASCAR, not a one of them starts exactly on time each and every event. Knoxville does a reasonably good job of organizing drivers and staff to start very close to the same time every week, and did a very good job last year of getting through the show in a timely fashion. Seems to me that part of the problem is that everyone wants more and more for less and less - you want the cars to go faster, the racing to be better, the track to be cleaner and the food to be cheaper, but you also want that precious ticket price to stay the same year after year. Maybe you'd like a free t-shirt too?
FWIW, Knoxville does a great job with their JR Fan Club. The kids get a t-shirt, a pizza party and an opportunity to meet with their favorite drivers. If kids are such a "nuisance," why do they continue this program? I for one have decided the crabby old men that sit behind me and don't want me to stand up when things get exciting make the track much less enjoyable... maybe its time for them to go to something a little slower - I hear the hobbies in Oskaloosa are a blast, and evidently Marshalltown is the place to be.
Some people aren't happy unless they're not so....

Other than the standing up part I couldn't agree more. I guess I'm getting old.

Get McCarl to fill the stands in,say, the 2nd week of June on a Monday and Tuesday night, and I'll then agree he should be promoter of the year.
While he does promote more than others do,he is also lucky there is the other race up the road 26 miles later that week, hence the big crowds.

He does fill a joint at the outlaw show at US36 on a Wed. evening

Moving from the midwest to the Northeast, Glenn Styres does a pretty good job promoting at Ohsweken. I remember seeing him personally at Rolling Wheels for the WoO race there promoting his WoO night at Ohsweken two months in advance. I don't know how often you see that.

Dirtgirl57x, the FRC is definately a great race to party! As far as children, if you notice this year and in years past, turns three and four of the infield are geared a little more towards families. There are small grandstands and there are no vehicles. People bring chairs and blankets and there is room for the kids to run around and play. The price in the infield for children is $5! Not bad for a big event. Have you ever been in the grandstands? Although we wish we had more seats, it is not a bad place for kids. Infact we always have something special for the kids, toys, shirts or more. Were you there when he dreesed up like Santa Claus and gave the kids all toys? The price for kids in the grandstand is $15, again not a bad price for a big event and FYI we don't get any of the food concessions. Also, if you notice we are one of the few events in the country that hasn't raised the grandstand price in years. As far as Terry as a promoter, he was instrumental in bringing in the WoO to US36. He is also part of the IRA group going to Burlington in May and tried his darndest to get the WoO there in July. He was also the crazy person who decided to try to pay the non-wing guys $30,000 to win for a one night show. He is always giving away merchandise to the teams even at the WoO show. Last year alone he gave away 3 chassis kits to the heat winners for the FRC and planned on giving away four Winters rear ends and Weld wheels to all of the heat and qualifier winners at the UC. This is for winning a heat race! Do you think these people gave us the chassis for free? They helped out but Terry bought these items to try and help out the owners. I could go on and on but if you knew Terry you would realize how much he loves sprint car racing and how passionate he is about it. He is already planning on some pretty big things for '09 for 410's in the midwest. FYI, tickets for the FRC and UC can be purchased by calling (515)-957-0020 LOL! Lori

All promoters aside, what about the actual track conditions down there? Maybe it is a legit reason because this race falls so soon in the season. Anyone seen any track prep or maybe the track is ok but the grounds are a mess? Who wants to go end over end after they hook a rut? Does anyone else but me think it could be a driver safety/ equipment issue as well?? Or is everyone of the "take the wings off, and pump up your ball sacks, Real Men...blah blah blah" mentality?

Lori- I meant no ill will against Terry. I don't disagree at all that he is a great promoter. I have not ever sat in the stands nor made my way towards 3 & 4 at the FRC, but I think its great that you guys have continued to try to cater to all different types of fans and include children - I apologize for making it seem otherwise. I have no doubt that Terry is VERY passionate about the sport, and I know he will continue to contribute and improve it with his involvement for many years. My point for nodust and others is more that they only see what they want to see at tracks, from who promotes to who is attending. Thing is, in the end, it takes more than smoke and mirrors to keep people coming back and they seem to think that by fixing this or that little thing, all can be right with the world, when in reality (as you guys know too well), you have to continue to somehow reinvent yourselves and draw in new fans while still pleasing the old.
Good luck in promoting future events - if you build it they will come! And don't worry, my tickets for the FRC are already secured!

My observations were aimed at retaining the Newbie.
The old time fan is willing to tolerate damn near anything to enjoy a sprint car race.
When I was a Newbie, I was bored silly with time trials, push starts and delays.
I really enjoyed the action .
decades later, I am still bored silly with time trials, push starts and delays.
My suggestions are geared toward the first time visitor.
You only have one chance to make a first impression.
I assume you work for the track, my rants are an effort to make the raceway better, but for decades, suggestions have been looked at as complaints and excuses for them have always been made.
The crowds decline shows that I must have been right or the crowds would at least be retained rather than drindling steady for the past decade.
Only the strong will survive.

Nope - I don't work for the track and have no personal connection with anyone there. I didn't even grow up around Knoxville... just have a different and outside view of the situation in comparison to other tracks I've spent a lot of time at in the past - I'd take Knoxville any day. Sure, they don't do everything right, but they must be doing SOME THINGS right - they still run a weekly sprint show with no door banging support classes that include joe blow's old Monte that was parked out in the back 40 and has been "resurrected" as a race car. My original point is that every track has room for improvement, small or big - even Marshalltown

I agree with you completly.
Knoxville is the best in the Nation, but. . . . .
Marshalltown has come light years in just 2 seasons with the new promoter.
I agree about the sprints only part.
I would really hate to ever see it, but the door bangers are a sure fire way to put more butts in the stands.

This entire promotion to kids probably needs another thread altoghter but .....
You have to be more specfic to the audience:
0-5 years / why not offer a nursery service (at a fee) for the mom and dads that want to come to the race but can't find baby sitters.
6-12 / take the kids (in a group) to the pits. Bring the drivers to the facility. This is where the promoter can use the drivers, cars, and rigs as props to give the kids an affinity and desire to force the parents to shows down the road. Give them an option to sitting on hard cold stands all night.
13-15 / make dads bring thier daughters so the boys have a reason to go.
16-18 / figure out a way that the girls will accept a date to the races........

How about....
Bring your 25 year old, Swedish Au Pair to the Races Night?

Sign me up for that night.
We use to stop at a cool little sports bar on the Napa river after wine tasting and on Saturday nights all the Au Pairs from the valley congregated. Talk about heaven...... in more ways than one.

Zero dust, no single file racing and no fuel stops at Fargo, Minot, Grand Forks (all ND), and Eagle. Some dust in feature at Husets,SD (that black dirt always goes to dust it seems) and Princeton,MN but no fuel stops. Single file racing in all heats at Fargo and some singe file in the feature (as happens at most 1/2 mile tracks) Guess all is good if you live in Fargo,ND, sort of central to those six WoO stops. Also packed house in Minot, Grand Forks, and Princeton, close to packed at Husets and Eagle and 2/3rd full in Fargo but again, the problem is the 1/2 mile single-file racing and it seats well over 10,000.
Adding $6 trillion of debt in his 1st term and now if
elected again he wouldn't have to worry about an
electorate in 2016 so the sky is the limit. And his EPA
would continue to put the screws to oil drilling and
mining for coal. Can you say bankruptcy.

No dust or fuel stops at Grand Forks, Minot, Fargo (all ND) or Eagle last year. No fuel stop at Princeton and Husets but some dust at both (Husets 410 sprint features routinely turn that very black dirt into dust). Sold out shows at Minot and Grand Forks, almost packed house at Eagle and Princeton and Husets, Fargo about 2/3 full. The only one of the six that had single file racing was Fargo and that is due to the nature of the track----its a half mile paper clip, pretty fast (127mph is lap record) and a half mile will get you single file racing. Now that the fans have been able to go 70 miles north of Fargo to the Grand Forks bull ring, many don't go to Fargo.
