A big thanks to everyone who voted. Unfortunately Wayne did not win the Alltel sponsorship. But we appreciate all your efforts.

Erin, Wayne should have skipped the Devils Bowl and gone to Bristol.

Concord, NC — Dave Hess Jr. Conquers Alltel All-Star Online Contest, Earns $12,000 Following Alltel DIRTcar Nationals Victory
By Chris Dolack VP Media/PR

Fierce voting down the stretch turned the inaugural Alltel All-Star contest into a virtual photo finish between UMP DIRTcar Open-Wheel Modified competitor Dave Hess Jr. and Sprint Car driver Wayne Johnson vying for the $12,000 top prize.

The online poll closed at 11:59 p.m. on March 16 with Hess, of Waterford, Pa., edging Johnson, of Mustang, Okla., by less than 1 percent of the overall votes. Of the thousands of votes cast for the 18 different drivers who earned victories in the 37th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals in February at Volusia Speedway Park, Hess earned 25.5 percent of the total votes, a shade more than the 24.6 Johnson received.

Hess, 23, was on his way home from watching Alltel Racing driver Ryan Newman compete at Bristol Motor Speedway when he got the news Monday morning.

Thanks to Wayne to all of the great racing you gave us this past weekend - and all of those past years, too.

Thanks to Erin for keeping Wayne so happy.

Thanks to everyone who voted. It was a good race and one to be proud of. Just a shame you (we) didn't win.

Now - next year you'll have to win that race in Florida again so we can all rally behind you again. We've learned a lot this time and the next time we can put you over the top. Hmmm - that might be the wrong saying. We can put you in the winners circle.

So as to not look like a bad loser, (even though I don't have a dog in the hunt, cock in the fight or Spitzer in the whorehouse) I would like to applaud Alltel and WRG (or whatever you call them) for the promotion.

While I would have done a number of things (too long, e-mail verification, etc....) differently it's cool to see that level of potential sponsorship throwing bones the dirt way.

Even though I'm sorry to see that a sprint guy (specifically Wayne) didn't win it I am appreciative that it happened at all. Additionally, I'm sorry that the WRG had P/R people contributing to the outcome. http://www.4m.net/showthread.php?t=44175&highlight=hess and many more.....

I also hope that if one of the sprint guys won it it, they would have answered the question "what will you do with the money" with a "put a big Alltel sticker on the cars", instead of "I don't know buy some parts".

Congrats to Dave too. Couldn't agree with you more, Scott. A damn good idea from a company to provide some sponsorship to low budget teams. Echoing Pong, thanks for taking the time to vote everyday. We'll get 'em next year!

SRC you are a little misguided on your complaint against WRG. The man who posted on 4M is the Eric Westendorf, who is also the P.R. person for Lernerville hence his handle, he was not acting on behalf of WRG. However in one respect you are correct, there was a very organized effort to help Dave Hess, Jr. win this money. Many of the western Pa. tracks through their employees, fellow competitors, and countless fans spread the word on Dave's behalf on various message boards. His father has raced for many years in our area and has long been a fan favorite. Dave Jr.is a heck of a racer himself and will do a great job representing ALLTEL with the sponsorship money. Congratulations to Dave Hess Jr,. and the people who helped this young racer win the contest.

For the record here is what Dave Hess Jr. had to day about getting the sponsorship, “I just want to thank everybody. Every morning we were checking the AlltelAllStar.com Web site. That $12,000 is going to help. I’m going to put it back in the car to help our program and put on a show for all of the fans that supported me. I want to thank Alltel for putting this together. I’ll show them as much support as I can for them supporting this program. I can’t thank them enough." Not the "I guess I'll buy some parts", line you spewed.

Since Lernerville Speedway is owned by WRG and I would assume the PR person is a paid employee then.....

And I appologize for the spew, since this is also what was written by Chris Dollack, it's what I saw.

“I’m not even sure what we’ll do with the money first. We’re going to be ordering parts real soon, and I’m sure it’ll cover some of the money we spent down in Florida. I just want to thank everybody, even those I don’t know personally, for being dirt track fans.”

Congratulations Dave Hess, make Alltel proud so they do it again.

I didn't like it towards the end. Wayne was gaining steadily every day and then when he got real close and within one percentage point, they changed the percentage of the votes to question marks for the top two. Then they waited all day to post the results and at that time they just gave the winners name who happened to be involved in a stock car program where most people feel that Alltel would probably get more exposure for their $12.000 than with a racer running around Knoxville and the Midwest. I was really hoping that Wayne would get it but am not surprised at the announcement. Just my opinon.

My wife told me if I went to one more Sprint Car race
she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss
that ol' gal.

I am completely bummed that he didn't win. I voted and voted and voted. I think their system was like Florida's voting system in 04.

I voted several times for Wayne, but I see the program as a way of gaining a mail list for junk mail, spam and telemarketer calls.

Usually I do NOT respond to these kind of "contests"

With Alltell not being a player in my area, I can understand the winner coming from an Alltell service area however.
