Bud Kaeding runs 18th in Mini Gold Cup feature
By Gary Thomas
March 10, 2008…Campbell’s Bud Kaeding returned to the Golden State Challenge Series in his own familiar No. 29 machine at the Mini Gold Cup and brought home an 18th place finish on Saturday night.
The event at Silver Dollar Speedway this past weekend saw one of the most competitive fields in Golden State Challenge history as a number of traveling stars took to the track to do battle with the best Nor Cal has to offer. A total of 65 cars showed up on Friday and 64 came back on Saturday to finish off the 22nd annual event.
Opening night saw Kaeding struggle in qualifying aboard the Kaeding Performance, Alviso Rock No. 29 which put him behind the eight ball with so many cars on hand. After finish sixth in his heat race he lined up outside the second row in the C-main. The 10 lap race saw Kaeding put on a show for the fans as he got up on the tip top of the track, riding the cushion and gunning for the win. The defending USAC Silver Crown champ certainly deserved an “A” for effort as he tried his best to make things happen and wasn’t content with a transfer spot.
Unfortunately the cushion was really thin and all it took was one slip up, which happened with just a couple laps left when Kaeding slid off turn four and came to a stop while running second. He was forced to restart at the tail of the field and was able to drive back up to eleventh, but it put an early end to the night.
Saturday saw Kaeding qualify 24th fastest, earning him the final spot to make the 24 car heat race inversion. Starting from the pole in the final heat race the 28 year-old had no problems and drove the K & N Filters, High Five Pizza No. 29 to a comfortable victory. It put him into the main event where he eventually went on to finish 18th after 40 laps of racing on the ¼ mile clay oval.
Up next for Bud Kaeding and the BK Racing team will be this coming Friday night at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville when the Golden State Challenge Series invades the Santa Cruz County Fairground facility. On Saturday Kaeding will make the drive to the Kings Speedway in Hanford to compete for Cruz Pedregon Racing in a USAC Western States Midget Series event.
