C-main charge comes up just short for Brett Miller
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA – March 8, 2008…Chico, CA youngster Brett Miller tried his best to run the alphabet soup on Saturday night at the Mini Gold Cup, but his bid came up just a couple spots shy of transferring into the B-main. The defending Golden State Challenge Series Rookie of the Year charged forward in the C-main during the final night of action, but with only 10 laps to work with he ran out of time in the short contest.
Opening night of the 22nd annual Mini Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday saw an amazing field of 65 sprint cars sign in at the back gate. Coming out ninth in the qualifying order the “Catfish” clocked in at 17th quick putting him on the front row of the night’s opening heat race. The initial start saw Miller be set back one row however, as race officials had deemed that he had started too early.
Keeping his composure Miller settled into third when the green flag waved again, but he had some fast company around him as World of Outlaw drivers Shane Stewart and Jason Meyers were right on his tail. After holding off the veterans for a few laps they were both able to get by the 18 year-old just a couple laps shy of the checkered flag forcing Miller to run the B-main. In the 12 lap event Miller lined up ninth and found a nice groove to make a late pass of Mike Henry to steal away the final transfer spot and put himself into the A-main where he went on to finish 16th.
Saturday night’s qualifying session didn’t go as well however, as Miller fought the car around track and timed in 50th fastest putting him into the non-qualifier D-main. The Chico driver had no problems and easily captured the eight lap event allowing him to move onto the C-main where started from the 16th position. The Care Free Pools team gave Miller a strong car for the 10 lap race and he charged forward to finish in fourth place, just two positions short of transferring into the semi. “The car felt really good in the C-main and although we didn’t transfer out, I was pleased with the run and we can’t argue with rolling the car back into the trailer in one piece,” Miller said.
The next scheduled event for Miller and the 1x team will be this coming Saturday night’s California Civil War 360 Series season opener at the high banked Placerville Speedway.
