Oh I think I know what you were responding to. I was saying Newman feels more like Gordon because I feel like Gordon abandoned open-wheel racing. Now Newman has been getting in dirt late models lately, but where was he at the Chili Bowl. He's more like Gordon in that sense, making it to NASCAR and then just basically cutting his ties. He's not like a Stewart or Kahne or Leffler who now contribute to the sport by owning teams that give drivers a ride, and coming back to run various events like the chili bowl. It seemed like he used USAC as a ladder to NASCAR and then kicked the ladder away just like Gordon did. He's not an open-wheel racer at heart is what I should have said. He used open-wheel racing to get somewhere, and when he got there he dropped it. I know all the NASCAR guys used it to get where they are, but some have a certain place in their hearts for it and keep coming back, and others like Gordon, just threw it in the past. That was my reference to Gordon in my previous post. Sorry for the confusion, I see that it was fairly ambiguous looking back.

How much money did they say Jeff has won in Nascar? In winnings its like 86 million. If you could make that much money racing Nascar, why would you put yourself in something that could danger your wealthy career? Kahne and Leffler combined dont have the money Jeff Gordon does.

Jeff was not a good sprint car driver, he was a exceptionally good one and if he would have stayed with it would have gone down as one of the best . Anyone who ever saw him in a USAC car, lets say at Winchester, giving one of the best ever, Rich Vogler all he could handle and more would agree.
I remember early on in his NASCAR careerer I had driven down to Yuma for a CRA show. Hewett had been flown in by JW hunt to run with Leland, Boat, and those guys and Jeff was there announcing for some obscure cable channel that was taping it. At that point he was still involved but was extremely disappointed that the road to Indy was closed to him at that time. I just wish it had been open for him and the rest of our great racers across the states. Still would like to see that.
