Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but to me 2008 looks like it is shaping up to be an interesting Rookie Of The Year challenge in the USAC/CRA. I don't know if all of these guys qualify as rookies, nor do I know if they plan to race for the title, but with Henry Clarke, Nic Faas, Austin Mero, Kenny Perkins, and who else?, all looking like possible contenders. This could get good.

I know that Pombo has ran some USAC/CRA races in the past, but is he still eligible for ROY?? If so, he is my pick.

I also wondered if Pombo is eligible, will someone out there fill us in? If he is in the ROY chase I'd have to agree with RadRobinlb.

If Mike Sala has an entry this year, and that seems to be the rumor, then my choice would be Ryan Kaplan the young driver from up north. I don't know what Kaplan's plans for this year are but every thing that I have heard about him has been impressive - both on dirt and asphalt. According to Marty Boyer on another post Sala will be at the PAS for the opener if he finishes up on the engines for his midgets. Kaplan will be his driver. I don't think Pombo will qualify for the ROY, but what do I know, I didn't think Scotty Weir would be ROY having run the year before with the USAC National series. Pombo has run several different times with CRA during the past few seasons. Counting the hours before the race.

Sure , depending on how many races he raced last year.

Scotty Weir just won it and I am pretty sure he won the national the year before that.

Rookie is anyone who is new to the series.

Last year people kept thinking Tyler or Garret were going for ROY and were suprised when Scotty won it. USAC should classify the rookies now so we can all watch there progress. Would be fun to see how everyone is doing on a weekly basis.

qmhandler I agree. Maybe with a new West Coast official USAC will provide us fans with more information. Hope so and its a way to promote the series and generate fan inteterest.

I read on midgetmadness that Kaplan is going to be running a late model on pavement...shame.

Scott D. did a great job of letting the fans know who was in the running for ROY tonight. Pombo is not one of them. Thanks Scott for keeping us informed.

I don't know if he will be a rookie because he ran some races last year but one to keep an eye on is Brent Camarillo. Last year he made the main in is 360 and looks good in 410s.

Bob:

I must have had my mouth engaged, and not my ears, when Scott was filling us in on this. Can you list who he said was in the chase?

Mike:

My recall is not the best, but I know he mentioned Jonas Reynolds, Nic Faas, Henry Clarke and Austin Mero. To the best of my knowledge he did not mention any rookie driver that was not there. He may have mentioned Perkins. I was impressed because he made a point of mentioning the rookies competing for the ROY, maybe in response to your thread as I am fairly certain he visits here from time to time. Anyway I thought it was great of him to bring the names of these first-year drivers (technically speaking) to the PAS crowd on Friday night. Unlike last year when many we're surprised by Scotty Weir winning the ROY, when I think alot of the race fans thought it was between Hansen and Brown. I am hoping that Brent and Brian Camarillo (not sure if their brothers or father and son) make it out this year.

Thanks Bob!

On another thread Perkins' dad mentioned that Kenny would be competing for CRA ROY. That is what started me thinking about how many new guys there were this year, and why I started this thread.
