NASCAR considering raising minimum age in Cup
SCENEDAILY - 11:38AM ET FRIDAY JANUARY 18, 2008 - BY BOB POCKRASS - ASSOCIATE EDITOR
Kyle Busch (left) and Reed Sorenson were both younger than 21 when they competed in their first NASCAR Cup race. NASCAR
is floating the idea to teams of raising the minimum age from 18 to 21
for Sprint Cup Series drivers, multiple sources have confirmed. Currently, 18 is the minimum age required for the three national touring series - Craftsman Truck, Nationwide and Cup. There are no current drivers under 21 in Cup competition. Kyle Busch, David Ragan and Reed Sorenson all competed in their first Cup event before their 21st birthday.
"We think it is a good idea for a number of reasons, the biggest
being that the sport can avoid an unnecessary dose of immaturity," Roush Fenway Racing President Geoff Smith
said of the idea. "The length of a Cup career can be so long that a
couple years of life's seasoning can't hurt anyone at that age."
The rule could have its biggest impact on Joe Gibbs Racing's Joey Logano,
who turns 18 in May and will compete in the Nationwide Series event at
Dover later that month. He won the Busch East title last year as a
rookie.
A JGR spokesman said the team has no comment on the proposed rule,
and a NASCAR spokesman also said that the sanctioning body would have
no public comment at this time.
