Bud Kaeding has tough Chili Bowl Midget Nationals

By Gary Thomas

Tulsa, Oklahoma – January 15, 2008…Going into the 22nd annual Dodge Chili Bowl Midget Nationals, Campbell, CA’s Bud Kaeding hoped to continue his recent string of success in big races. Like happens all too often in racing however, the luck factor came into play and left the two-time and defending USAC Silver Crown Series champion with a disappointing week of action.

This was Bud’s eighth time competing in the event that sees drivers from all forms of motorsports do battle on the ¼ mile bullring located inside the QuickTrip Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was also his first Chili Bowl appearance since 2006 when he made the main event on Saturday night and finished in the 15th position. For the event this year Bud was competing aboard the Murray Erickson owned Mopar powered Spike Chassis No. 8x machine.

Bud hit the track for the Thursday qualifying night and some bad breaks, mixed in with some motor issues, took a toll on the defending Oval Nationals champ leaving him with few points and forcing him to start a ways back in the mains on Saturday. With 274 midgets competing over five days, it makes it crucial to have everything go your way and after putting the qualifying night behind him, Bud came back on Saturday and lined up 12th in the first G-main.

The 28 year-old got his elbows up in G-main and carved his way forward to finish fourth and transfer into the first F-main. He then started from the rear in that main and was moving forward when he was involved in a wreck which put an end to his Chili Bowl bid. “It was disappointing not to have better results, but that’s what happens in racing sometimes and we’ll just move on to the next race,” Bud commented.

With the Chili Bowl behind him, Bud and the BK Motorsports team are getting everything ready for the upcoming Copper on Dirt at the Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Arizona. The event takes place on February 15 & 16 and is the kick off to the 2008 USAC Silver Crown Series as well as the USAC National & Western Midgets and USAC/CRA Sprint Cars. Bud has enjoyed much success in his career at the famed Manzy ½ mile as he’s a two-time winner of the Western World Championships and finished this past year’s Western in third place.

For ’08 look for Bud to chase his third straight USAC Silver Crown Series title as well as compete with the Golden State Challenge Series in his own BK Motorsports No. 29 and also in various wingless action including the Sprint Bandits TNT Tour in August and the special late season shows.
