Brett Miller gains experience in 1st Chili Bowl Midget Nationals

By Gary Thomas

Tulsa, Oklahoma – January 15, 2008…Competing in his first career Chili Bowl Midget Nationals at the QuickTrip Center in Tulsa, OK this past week, California sprint car racer Brett Miller transferred into the G-main on Saturday night in an event that saw a stacked field of 267 race cars in competition during the week.

The five day Dodge Chili Bowl saw drivers from all forms of motorsports tackle the tiny bullring inside the Tulsa QuickTrip Center and the Saturday finale was broadcast on HBO Pay Per View for the first time. For the event Brett competed aboard the Fauver Race Ready Rentals, Care Free Pools, Zilla Chassis No. 64 and ran in the Friday O’Reilly Auto Parts qualifying night.

During the qualifying night he and the team toughed it out with a wire coming loose in the heat race to finish sixth, before having a fuel pump issue later in the evening which ultimately put an end to the night and left Brett with a low point total. Keeping positive though he and the Fauver Race Ready Rental crew came back on Saturday looking to make it as far as possible through the alphabet soup. Main events during the day on Saturday went as far back as a K-main and the “Catfish” was set to run his first event in I-main number two.

With the experience of Friday night underneath his belt, Brett gassed it up from the ninth starting spot to carve his way forward and finish fourth in the 10 lap non-stop contest. It transferred him into the H-main where he was in the wrong place at the wrong time when a couple cars in front of him got together and left him with front end damage. It put an end to the Chili Bowl for Brett and the guys but the experience gained was well worth the trip and it’s something the 18 year-old definitely wants to do again.

Racing journalist and media member Bobby Gerould made mention of Brett in his Chili Bowl Midget Nationals recap column: “Brett Miller impressed during his Saturday afternoon racing. Miller ripped the top of the track and passed cars like a veteran even though it was his first try at it,” Gerould said.

With the ’08 sprint car racing season rapidly approaching, Brett and the Care Free Pools Racing team are looking forward to getting everything started. Look for Care Free Pools Racing to focus on the Feather Falls Casino Friday night point championship at Silver Dollar Speedway as well as running in select other races with various sanctioning bodies during the season. "Catfish" is amazing to work with! All we saw all week was a smile ear to ear on him. He really took to midget racing and said he really liked racing midgets, it was his first time and he definately wants to do more midget racing.

What can't be explained, unless you were there to see it yourself, was he really looked like a "veteran" at it!! Having had maybe only 20 laps at the Bowl he was splitting two cars in front of him in the middle time after time to gain a better spot, the crowd was wild watching him, up high to pass, down low to pass and splitting them it was really impressive to watch if he had been a veteran, but to be a "rookie" it was amazing to watch. Racing Chili Bowl you also need a lot of luck, along with skill, and in the next race the skill was there but the luck ran out. He was definately on the move to the front again when he had no place to go when the 2 cars in front of him wrecked.

He looks to be on the list with Ryan Kaplan as a "natural" race car driver who can drive anything he chooses and excell in it. Both of them are born naturals and I see them going as far as they want to go in racing. They are truly "golden boys" and a lot of fun to watch as they grow in the sport.
