Good for him.  I know there's been a lot of whining about him leaving sprint cars on many of the other boards/pages, but who could blame someone for trying to make the best living possible???     Also, I've seen it stated that there isn't much difference in earnings between the top earners in Nascar and the top earners on dirt.  LMFAO!!!!   If anyone wants to make that ridiculous comment, maybe do a little research first.  Do drivers make what they made 20 years ago?  Hell no.  It's well documented the contract values have fallen significantly.  I believe Junior, Gordon, and Jimmie were making very comfortable double-digit million dollar salaries--some reports have them at $20-30 million at their peak earnings.  I know it's fallen substantially, but there are still plenty of guys making million dollar+ deals.  For example, multiple sources report many drivers just below the $10 million mark per year with a guy like Stenhouse making $3 million and a guy like Suarez making $2 million.  How many years on the dirt would it take a top 410 driver to make what a top Nascar driver pulls in?   Very specific number:  A LOT!   wink

I'm happy for the kid.  Also, I'm not going to shame him if he decides to concentrate his efforts on stock cars and doesn't jump back in the sprint car.  That's none of my business.  He's gotta do what is in his best interest and it may not involve entertaining everyone on this forum and we'll just have to live with that!

Thanks for letting us fans know how to handle a young dirt track racer going off to nascarland. It's something that many have never seen and may never see again in our lifetimes. I'm really glad you are happy for the kid and you are willing to help people understand his decision. Once again, thanks for all you do to help the common fan understand the sport and how it has changed and needs to be. Keep it up and the you'll be a HOF nominee!

Time to drag this quote back out.

You ever watch lions at the zoo? You can always tell which ones were captured in the wild by the look in their eyes. The wild cat. She remembers running across the plain, the thrill of the hunt. Four hundred pounds of killing fury, locked in a box. But after a while, their eyes start to glaze over, and you can tell their soul has died. The same thing happens to a sprint car driver. 40 weeks of Nascar per year is no joke. They'll take a wild man like Corey and throw him the parking lot of a Home Depot for 4 hours to sign autographs just for the fun of it. No more slide jobs to make, no more cushions to ride. Just a 3400 lb. sled with a window net and a spotter in your ear. He could avoid all of that by not chasing the money.

Ever consider the possibility that:

His goal could have been stock cars all along?

Or, maybe his goal was financial security?

I think you are misunderstanding the NASCAR vs dirt racing earnings.  Sure IF you make it to the cup series you're probably making more than a million dollars.  However, the only one I remember right off that raced in the cup series right away was Montoya.  Years ago (like probably 15-20) I heard a quote from someone who said "Most Busch drivers are probably making less than you do at your job per year".  And he said most of the truck drivers didn't make enough to survive on their salary alone, most have family money or work some other job.  At first you might think inflation has changed that and they probably make more now.  However I saw an interview with Joey Logano last year where he was asked about racing Busch races and he said he can't find a ride unless he pays.  So yes, I believe for almost anybody they are going to take a paycut to go the NASCAR route vs. the dirt route UNLESS you were put right into the cup series.  And racing in the Busch series for a couple years doesn't guarantee you're going to make it to the cup series (ask Haley Deegan).

I agree with the point about the Xfinity (or Busch) rides being a lot of pay to play rides.  However, guys that are coveted by owners, and don't have family dollars, are likely earning a salary---much like dirt but the pay scale is higher.  Guys that want to make a name for themselves are relying on family money to pay for a ride---much like dirt but the money doesn't get you as far in dirt.   I'm not sure where Day is on this list, but I'm assuming he's one of the guys sought after by owners at the top levels.  That all said, if we're comparing apples to apples, if a guy is pay to play, he's only getting to the level his family can afford.  If he's a potential generational talent, and is being paid for his potential earnings, a driver like Larson, Bell, and Day are going to make WAY more in stock cars than on dirt.  There is simply more viewers and more money to go around.  I never meant to imply J.J. Yeley's Xfinity salary was higher than David Gravel's.

The heck you say? You mean to tell me that some race car drivers may like more than 1 form of racing? And they may want to try other forms? And they may also have dare I say, different goals than some of the fans out there?

It's always entertaining that no matter who it is over the years, whenever a driver tries their hand at making it to Nascar we see the usual comments like: "We lost another one to insert nascar reference here (nascrap or napcar)" or "He is too talented to go there" or "who would want to go to that media circus" or "I thought he was a real racecar driver" or "I hope he knows things are a lot different there than in sprint cars" or "I don't know why anyone would want to race there" or "I guess he just races for money, not for the love."

There are many more but those are some of my personal favorites that seem to be said everytime.

It is his life, his dreams, his goals and aspirations. Might be different than mine but hey, its not my life, its his. How many times have we worked with someone and they take a position that we probably would not take if offered to us but yet, it might fit them. While I enjoy watching him race a sprintcar, if he wants to try something different then good for him. It's his life, you only get 1 shot at your youth so you might as well go for it that way you never have to wonder, what if.

I couldn't agree more.  Hoping Mr. Hendrick allows it, and hoping Day has the desire to do it.  If he doesn't want to, or wants to focus solely on reaching the top level of stock car racing, I have 100% respect for that as well.  It would be fun to see Larson, Day, and Bell in the A-main at the Knoxville Nationals some day..........
