Alot of heat goes out a tailpipe.  This really heats up shocks.  Teams spend alot of time on shock dynos.  Heat changes the readings alot.  I think the exhaust outlet being high is to keep shocks cooler.  You also do not want your tires to get hotter than needed.  This keeps tires cooler.  My guess is you will see more cars try this.

Someone with a much better memory that mine, help me out here....wasn't there a non-wing driver that occassionally ran with the USAC sprints national series who drove a black or dark gray car that had upturned headers? I want to say Tye Mihocko.

Kenny Weld built a radical looking car in the late eighties that had the headers reversed with them pointed the opposite direction.

Damion Gardner, Kevin Ramey, Sammy have all run a form up upturned tailpipes or even upsidedown headers over the years. then you had the zoomies in the 70's...

During the 80s all the cars had turned up header with super traps. In California and Devils Bowl Mufflers were required.

Donny Schatz interview on sprintcar unlimited he said he thought he had a shock going bad in the feature friday night. Exhaust and getting hot is hard on them. But one guy here has that figured out

Wouldn't turning them straight down accomplish the same thing and not send the exhaust fumes into the cockpit?

We ran them that way in the early to mid 90's with supertraps at Skagit Speedway when I was racing as well. Then we went to the flowmasters. I ran turn downs on mine and never had any problem heating my shocks up...

Maybe everyone will start running them. They used to say if Karl Kinser put a dog turd on his hood everyone would put one on their hood.

It makes sense to me.  Larson was the only one that I'm aware of who didn't change tires.  Would this be the first time someone didn't change rear tires at the break?  When I was watching this I was thinking "why wouldn't you change tires?"  But once it got down to five laps to go I thought "I guess you know what you've got with this set of tires.  If you're confident the tires would make the distance, why take the chance of putting on a bad set of tires?".  There could be something to this, with keeping the rear tires cooler.

My son took pictures of Larsons 2 rear tires.  They looked like they could go another 50 laps.

My best guesses are:

1. The heat rises so the tire heats up less causing less wear.

2. Again heat goes up so oil or gas shock is more consistent.

3. Acts like a drag car with headers turned upwards and slightly back for downforce and propulsion.

Any little bit helps. And as for the sound the direction of the exhaust would change the sound a lot to those sitting in the stands. Audibly deeper sounding for sure at Nationals.

Larson wins another one last night at Tulare.  Headers going this way or that....that car is a rock right now!

We ran them that way back in the 90's.   Nothing new to see here.

I showed my GF all the hoopla about Larson's exhaust and how Silva was so cutting edge doing it.  Then I brought out a pic from 1998 with my car having mufflers like that.  I guess years ago some of of did some amazing things.......or just had common sense.

I never understood blowing hot exhaust on the tires or components.

I  personally always ran mufflers even on tracks where you could run open headers.  I always wanted to hear when they were coming.up on me. With open headers your car is too loud to hear the other cars.
