When I was young (as hard as it is to believe) I cut my teeth on sprint car racing at the old Manazanita Speedway watching CRA and the Western World Championship, both non wing.  Now days I watch a lot of USAC sprint racing and I thoroughly enjoy it.  Yes wings are fun, but there's more than one flavor!

3DB...... nope my old brain isn't connecting.   Steve Kinser in a non wing sprint car was a sight to see, he was such a fierce competitor

Yes, the 3 Day Blinds sponsored car.  I have a large poster in my garage of Ron Shuman in the 3DB backing it in. Not sure where the photo was taken.

OK you got me!!  When I think of Ronnie Shuman I picture this.....

I have a wooden sprint car, 21x OFIXCO Special, made and painted by a guy in Pennsylvania in the mid 80's, a splinter sprinter, its one of my most prized collectables

And here's a Manzy Mag pic from 1984....

Traditonal Sprints are making a come back. They seem to be all over the country now in one shape or another.

I too grew up at Manzy in the late 60's-the mid 80's.

Shuman, McSapdden, Larry Clack, Gene Brown,Bob More,Bob East, Jerry Mclung and many other AZ guys at the time. When the CRA guys came to town it was a great show with Dean Thompson, Jimmy Sills, Jimmy Oskie and Eddie Wirth to just name a few. Manzy shows were the best!!! Midgets, Super Modifieds and Sprints the same night was the best show going. Oh and who didn't love Wendy McDonald!!!!!!!!

Years ago I bought blinds from 3day blinds -because I had read about the owner being a long time car owner/sponsor and if I was spending money on something like that at least it supported racing lol.  I also remember one of the first Open Wheel magazine covers with Dean Thompson on it.  Gotta love seeing those non wing cars pitched sideways!  I regret that I never made it to Manzanita, but did get to Ascot one time.

I prefer wingless, but Indiana is a lot further for me than Pennsyltucky

So I usually hit a few Eastern Storm races

I wish USAC still did their Eastern midget tour....

Speaking of the non-wangs if you've been following USAC recently, they have a bit of contoversy on their hands with Mr. Ballou.

He is quite entertaining on and off the track. Should be an interesting Sprintweek coming up.

2 different teams (#69 & #19) were spotted with weight ballast bolted on in front of the front axle which is a direct violation of the rules and nothing was done about it. Robert called USAC (and Bacon) out on it while being interviewed 2 weeks in a row now.

You can still get your PA midget fix. Extreme midget series Appalachian Midget week, 8-7  to 8-10 at all the tracks you know and love.

I used to be ALL wangs until 2 buddies and I went to the Indiana Sprint Weeks opening 2 shows in 2016.  Then, my home track Wilmot, started running the Wisconsin wingLESS EVERY week and I was hooked.  Sure, they are crate motors, but some of those guys can really wheel those 450 hp cars.  Very entertaining.  The wingLESS fly under the IRA banner. I will still go see the IRA and Outlaws when around and go to the Knoxville Nats. but I think my passion is non wing.

Get on the Indiana Open Wheel website for all of the details. The thread on their forums is titled "Robert Ballou's comments after Macon."  It is now up to 10 pages long with 95 comments, and I doubt that it is done yet. Pretty interesting read.

Apparently Moles, Bacon and USAC don't need to read it either.
