He is way too low key to make a big deal out of this, but Byron Reed is quietly retiring after this season. A staple of Ohio sprint car racing for over 30 years, Byron also got it done without a wing earlier in his career with several USAC starts. Thanks for the memories!

I'll hate not seeing that red toterhome parked in it's usual spot at Fremont. frown

He made the A at Knoxville one year. Hope he wins a few this year to go out in style.

There was a black #5 in the 305's at Attica that looked like one of his old cars.

When I was in high school/college my family used the Knoxville Nationals as our family vacation. We would often visit a track or two on our way out. We tried Fremont one year. Byron Reed went to victory lane that night. He announced in Victory Lane he was going to Knoxville. A great moment and he made new fans from Southwest PA that night.

This makes me feel extremely old since Byron and I were students at the same time at the University of Toledo. He's truly been a staple of Ohio sprint car racing for years but like has been mentioned did well when he took the wing off to race against USAC and CRA and made the Knoxville Nationals in his only attempt. You never want to ask what if but a couple of very hard crashes at Eldora in the 90s including hitting the wall head on at the flag stand and shattered his leg probably kept him in Ohio for most of his career.

I was sitting down low on that chilly April evening in 1998 when went head first into the wall. That was a thump I won't forget.

Also the header he took down the backstretch in 99' was wild.
