Got my Speed Sport magazine (mostly a fendered car mag) today.  Bob Hurley on the cover.   Starting reading first page, then put it down.  Later, I picked it up and thought my wife had also picked up my Sprint Car & Midget magazine from the mail as that was now the cover page(Gio Selzi's pushing his sprint car thru the turn).  .

Well, they've now combined the two.  Half way thru one or the other the pages are upside down and the back cover is a typical Sprint Car & Midget cover.  Has to save a lot of postage and ???? whatever.  Doesn't bother me as long as neither magazine is not shortchanged in coverage.  But not everyone wants both magazines.  Will see how this works out.  Maybe something to do with the loss of the great Doug Auld.  Have not read much yet, but somewhere there is an article explaining the double issue.

If this has been covered previously I apologize  (looked back a few weeks on Hoseheads and didn't see anything).

I don't like it as much as the original, but I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt & see how it works out.....

Of course it has to do with Doug's passing. He probably did most of the work. I know he answered phone calls

my guess it saves them a bunch of money on postage which has gotten very high.  Was probably talked about when Doug was alive.  They will probably lose some money on advertisement as companies need only advertise in the 1 magazine now.  We are lucky to have them, look at all the magazines that failed.

You must have the whole set of Open Wheel Magazine too.

Actually missing four or five of them, of course issue # 1 is one of the missing. When I go on trips I take some of the old Open Wheels with me to read again, its interesting to see how much has changed over the years.  Who would have thought spoked wheels would ever be obsolete?

As stated on page 17 in the article from the CEO, they will eventually merge the two magazines into

one SPEED SPORT Magazine. They will continue to push that day as far into the future as possible.

But look for one magazine in the future.

Print media will soon be a thing of the past...

The internet is a frikkin horror, and except for a few sites like this I don't use it anymore.  I have several magazine sub's again, I love reading magazines.

I am with you...Yes you can get a ton of racing information from social media and the internet, but there is nothing like opening your mail box and seeing the latest Racing publication. I try and support as many as I can including Speed Sport/Sprint Car & Midget, Area Auto Racing News and a fairly new one, Dirt Empire.

Thank you for supporting us!

The rising cost of print and postage is likely the driving force between their combining. Paper is becoming difficult to obtain right now, as the chemicals needed to make the pulp are affected by the supply chain issues, as well. We were not excluded from the rising costs, but I'd rather see them around as one magazine than as none. I cut my teeth growing up on Open Wheel reading with my father (and still have some of them), and my first real subscription to a magazine was Sprint Car Midget. There's just something about being able to feel it in your hands and carry it with you. I'm still a subscriber to SCM, was devastated even as a kid that Open Wheel was gone, and I actually read our Dirt Empire issues from cover to cover because I still love print magazines and reading about the sport. Aside from Hoseheads and social media, I don't even read anything online for racing news, which I know will be shocking to some since I'm in the generation of computers, but I don't find enjoyment in surfing the web.

The internet can be a horror if a person doesn't look in the right place.  I only check sanction and track websites and YouTube pages.  The in depth features on sites like Floracing and following driver YouTube channels in the case of someone like David Gravel are good as well.  Dirtvision highlites are posted promptly on YouTube as well.  I have it all bookmarked and get all the driver and series news I can handle.  Magazines are on the way out, I use my phone to go to news sites and seldom crack a printed page open anymore.

Actually I wrote and had my photos appear at one time in Flat Out so I used to be tied to magazines at one time.  I know some still like them but there is so much information at our fingertips.  Watching races just about every day of the week takes some of the luster out of mags.  Years ago the printed word was all we had but today there is so much televised racing they kind of feel like another TV show.  I see so much racing content that I find myself switching the channel during support class heats and come back to watch the Sprints.  All that exposure has taken some of the anticipation and excitement out of it when I can follow live races on my phone when I'm out and about.  It has been a game changer for print media.  This is the best time to follow racing in my lifetime and my first race was in 1960 so I have been watching for a long time.  Now I carry more news and video than I have time to watch in my pocket.
