Husets Speedway Thumbs up/ Thumbs Down June 20,2021

Thumbs Up:
*$7000 to win the 4100 feature as a prelude to the big races at Husets and Jackson the rest of the week
*Austin McCarl pocketing that $7000 by being untouchable in the feature
*Four out of the top 10 in the 410 feature were from California- Dominic Scelzi, DJ Netto, Tim Kaeding, & Shane Golobic
* Two out of the top 5 in the 410 feature were named McCarl- Austin & Carson
*Austin McCarl making the near-miss of the century in his 410 heat race. His car was a rocket on a rail out of turn 4 headed straight for Chuck McGilvrey who was turned against the front stretch wall at the flagstand. I think everybody in the stands said “Oh dear!” about the same time Austin did. An impossible left turn, a quick right turn, a little bit of fish-tailing and disaster was averted.
*Micha Slendy won his first IMCA sprint feature. He said he grew up watching races at Husets. I think a lot of the current racers there have as well.
*Dusty Ballenger went finished 4th from 11th start in the IMCA feature.
*Mike Moore went 12th to 5th as well.
*Late model street stock feature was a good one. Leaders were Ron Howe, Dan Jensen, Matt Steuwald and Cory Yeigh for the win from 10th starting.
*Colby Klaasen came from 12th to finish 2nd.
*The new campground at the north end of the parking lot is done.
*The 50/50 ticket winner got north of $1500. The funds raised went towards a cancer charity.
*410 feature almost went green for 30 laps.
*The instant replay on the big screen is pretty cool. I think it’s probably better than in the past at a racetrack with a different name on account of Dirt Vision being there?
*The Speedway honored the late Chuck Zitterich who did a lot for local racing over the years.
*They also honored track worker Ron Graves and driver Bill Rook who were killed in an accident at the track on Father’s Day, 1987.
*Ron’s son Frank Grave gave out hard charger awards in each class in honor of his father. Happy Father’s Day Frank.

Thumbs Down:
*I was there on Father’s Day, 1987. It was not a good day for racing.
*A crash in the IMCA sprint feature had Jared Jansen’s #81 hitting the inside berm in turn 3, flipping over the top of #6 Bayley Ballenger and peeling the wing off of #8 Jacob Hughes. There was discussion around me about who or what started that fiasco.
*Nate Barger destroyed his IMCA sprinter in had crash at the flag stand.  I don’t know what started it, as I first noticed it when he was flipping as high as the fence. When he came down, Sam Henderson had no place to go and smacked into him. Both drivers were OK. Barger’s car had broken down tubes and everything else bent.
*Ron Howe spun in front of the pack in turn 3 about 3 laps into the LMSS feature. There will be a lot of sheet metal work and welding being done locally this week.
*The cost to get in jumped from $18 to $20 for this event?
*I saw two guys debating whether to pay the extra $2 or to go home. They decided to skip some of their anticipated beer experience and fork over the $2. They didn’t appear to be mathematicians.
*Racetrack was really narrow for heat races but widened up thanks to judicious use of a road grader.
*The $7000 winner’s payout and my extra $2 brought in about 4 extra 410’s.
*I did not win the 50/50

This N That:
*Shout out to Stu, who probably only came here to read this.
*I brought a wool stocking cap. I’m no dummy!
*Why can’t the scoreboard be used to tell the names of who is on the track running timed trials or tell the line-ups as the cars are getting ready to race? It seems half the time, what’s on the scoreboard isn’t relative to what’s happening on the track.
*Greg Bakker is now driving the DeWall #16. What happened to Brooke Tatnell?
* I gave up on the parking lot. I parked at Robert Bennis school about a half mile west and hoofed it in. It saves about a half hour getting out and lord knows I need the exercise.
*Trivia question, I suppose: At intermission, they used to grade from the top down to the bottom. Now, they start in the middle and grade to the top. Why the difference?
*Because of the many levels of equipment and spending, I doubt if many of Sunday night’s top 10 finishers in the 410’s will make it into the top 10 Monday and Tuesday night.

It was a good night of racing, but hard on some of the equipment. What did you think of the races last night? Will you be there tonight?

Biggest thumbs up about Husets Speedway is ...previous owner (and constant liar) sold track and is no longer involved with Husets!

Thumbs up: Nick Barger was ok after his wreck. I've never seen a down tube snap like that, it could have been really bad but he was out immediately.

The track set up really nice. Whatever machine they used to move the berm made quick work of it.

Crowd was pretty decent

Got to take my son to his first race ever. I think he liked it!

Thumbs down: Nothing really. I think they are on the right track. The three classes they run all fit a niche. 305s are a nice starter class.

Brooke and Garrett both raced at Ogilvie Raceway last Saturday night.  Ogilvie is about an hour north and west of us as the crow flies here in Forest Lake so he was close to home.  Brooke won in the 360 and Garrett ran his second race in the Micro.  I was up there watching through the Heats but boogied out before dark so I didn't have to fight deer and cataracts after dark.  Took me about an hour to get back to Forest Lake and was home in time for WoO and Knoxville 410 Features on Dirtvision.  Brooke won the 360 Feature and I'm kicking myself for having to miss that.
