UPDATE ON MARCH USAC/CRA SPRINT CAR RACES AT CANYON
FEBRUARY 4, 2021... After receiving numerous inquiries, here is the latest information on the March 12th and 13th season opening races at Canyon Speedway Park.
For those that have not followed, the dates were released as part of USAC/CRA’s 2021 schedule on December 23rd. On January 7th, it was announced that a new promotion team took over the Peoria, Arizona facility. The track management released a schedule of events and the March “Spring Showcase” dates were not listed.
Recently, new series coordinator Tony Jones has had discussions with CSP’s promoter to bring back the NASCAR weekend dates and make the events possible. The talks were positive and track management expressed interest in having USAC/CRA at the facility. Jones has also been in contact with USAC National officials about the situation. It should be noted that there are obstacles to overcome for the March dates and Tony has discussed options with Canyon Speedway Park and USAC.
As this writing goes to press, the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic is still going strong throughout the nation. Local county and state health departments are currently allowing the track to operate at a maximum of twenty-five (25) percent capacity in the grandstands. Without a strong fan turnout or extra track sponsorship, this makes it tough to pay the USAC/CRA purse. In addition, if the Coronavirus situation changes for the worse by raceday, local health officials could shut the track down at a moment’s notice.
A decision will be made by Canyon Speedway Park management very soon regarding the March dates. Jones and USAC/CRA officials will relay the decision as soon as possible. Tony can be reached at [email protected].
