GRANT SEXTON SCORES CAREER BEST 2nd PLACE FINISH!

(Lakeside, CA, August 2, 2019) Grant Sexton backed up his impressive seventh-place finish at the Clay Cup in Washington with a career-best second place in the California Lightning Sprint Car main event last Saturday night at the Santa Maria Raceway.

A week after their long trek to Washington, 15-year-old Grant and his father Brent made the 248-mile journey to represent Sexton/Gatlin Racing on the Santa Barbara County 1/3 of a mile clay oval.  Sixteen other CLS cars showed up for a night of action and Grant qualified eighth overall with a lap of 14.235.  Brent timed in 12th at 14.606.

With 18 cars on hand, there were two eight-lap heat races on the night.  As luck would have it, father and son were both matched in the second heat.  Like in qualifying, Grant got the best of his “Old Man” placing second while Brent finished two spots behind in fourth.

With all the preliminaries out of the way, Grant lined up on the inside of the second row for the 25-lap A Main.  Brent was starting quite a way behind on the outside of the fifth row.

Once the main event began, Grant locked his beautiful #3 into the third-place spot.  He hit his marks every lap and stayed in that position for the first portion of the race before briefly slipping back to fourth.   When the race hit the 20-lap mark, he was back up to third and it seemed as though the teen was destined to finish there.  However, a yellow flag flew on the last lap.  The car that was in second at that point dropped out with clutch issues.  That elevated Grant up to the runner-up position for the restart with a lap to go.

When the green and white came out for the final restart, the third-place car lunged to the inside of Grant in turn one.  As they came off turn two, Grant got a tremendous drive on the wide line and pulled away from his challenger and seconds later, he had the best finish of his career.

Brent’s start in the middle of the pack saw him confront a dilemma most of the other drivers in the field faced.  It was hard to pass.  He advanced two spots from his original starting position to finish eighth.  He was one of only two drivers to go forward more than one spot in the race.

After two straight weekends of long hauls, Sexton/Gatlin racing will enjoy a race at its home track, the Barona Speedway, on August 10th.
