The Kings Royal is hands down (from an atmosphere standpoint) the best sprint car race in the world. Nothing comes close, not even Knoxville. Seeing all the campers in the campgrounds throughout the track is incredible. Also seeing the surrounding small towns come to life for a race weekend is truly special. 1 more week!!

I agree, great time. We’re coming in from Rhode Island. Wish ISW were the same week so we could catch some USAC too. Has anyone seen a entry list for the KR?

The atmosphere at the Royal is definitely not the same as Knoxville's. I don't think I would go as far as to say the Nationals atmosphere isn't even close to it... but hey, you're entitled to your opinion! They're both very cool events. This year will be my 10th King's Royal, although I've taken a pretty lengthy hiatus. Thursday can't come fast enough!

I don’t think there is an entry list per se… but here is what I’ve got based on who showed up last year, who has raced there so far this year, etc, etc:
WoO (14): Donny Schatz, Brad Sweet, David Gravel, Daryn Pittman, Shane Stewart, Sheldon Haudenschild, Logan Schuchart, Ian Madsen, Brent Marks, Kraig Kinser, Cory Eliason, Jason Sides, Jacob Allen, and Greg Wilson. Clyde Knipp pulled off the tour about a month ago, but he might show up for this... ??
All Star/Ohio cars (16): Carson Macedo, Aaron Reutzel, Chad Kemanah, Jac Haudenschild, Parker Price-Miller, Dave Blaney, Paul McMahan, Cale Conley, Ryan Smith, Lee Jacobs, Travis Philo, Gary Taylor, Shawn Dancer, Dan McCarron, Trevor Baker, Brandon Wimmer
Invaders (14): Christopher Bell, Kerry Madsen, Brian Brown, Tim Shaffer, Rico Abreu, Gio Scelzi, Joey Saldana, Sammy Swindell, Trey Starks, James McFadden, Brady Bacon, Hunter %, Dominic Scelzi, Josh Baughman
Wild Cards (18): Caleb Helms, Cap Henry, Craig Mintz, Max Stambaugh, Chris Andrews, Max McGhee, Paige Polyak, Joe Swanson, Jordyn Brazier, Carl Bowser, Gerard McIntyre, Dustin Daggett, Adam Cruea, Danny Holtgraver, Tyler Esh, Brandon Spithaler, Brian Paulus, Bob Tucker
I'm sure I'm probably missing somebody obvious. At any rate, that's 62 cars. Not all of the bottom group will show up. If all from the top 3 groups do though and a handful from the bottom group, it'll be a great show.

The Thurs & Fri winners get to choose what qualifying time spot they want on Saturday... ie, the draw means nothing to them. With the unique KR format, you want to time in 25th-30th to start on the front row of a heat. Seems like a crapshoot to know when to go out to achieve that, so not sure it’s much of an advantage IMO.

Never been to Eldora until last year..Being 69 yrs old I couldn't believe the atmophere..We parked the home about 75 steps from the 1-2 turn..Rain first night, re- did track and racing ended around 3 AM..Best race weekend I remember and I've been doing WOO for many years..The Americana coming into the track was unreal..Small towns..Just wish I had a camera and car to look through them..Very historical..Tony's track is the nicest I've seen for a dirt track..Loved the whole weekend...

I will say this. The atmosphere at the Knoxville Nationals was much better years back when we could camp openly out on the fairgrounds. Venders open all night.....especially the tenderloin shack...horseshoes being tossed nearly all night after the races.....and people all over the grounds with tv's and chairs set out with sprint car videos (tapes) running until morning. Race teams scattered about. Race fans gathering all around and shooting the breeze about racing. Then five, six or seven hours of sleep and back at it again by early afternoon. It's almost become too big.....too commercial to enjoy like in years past. That or maybe I'm just getting old. Even the anticipation has waned in recent years.

The corn belters are not going to take too kindly to your comments but yes the KR does have a festive feel all of it's own.
The early un-sanctioned ones that had more of Earl's personal touch were some of my favorites.

"small towns".... if you ever get the chance, check out National Bicycle Museum (or something like that) in New Bremen. I thought it would be mildly interesting... nope, ASTOUNDING! Bikes like we see now were built by the 1890s, but lots of people had their own shops & ideas & were still experimenting, some outrageous stuff. I didn't have a camera when I went... how good was it? So good that I drove 80 mph from my friend's place 2 or 3 hrs. away in Homerville to get back with a camera before it closed....

I heard a couple of weeks ago there was going to be a SMALL advantage to the winners of the prelims. I haven't heard this exact rule but this would qualify as an advantage.

I have been going to the Kings Royal for 10 years now and I love this upcoming week with the Brad Doty Classic on Tuesday & now the 3 day format. Not able to go to the Thursday race but will be there Friday & Saturday. Its one of the best week's of the year.
Personally though I prefer the Knoxville Nationals though but the Kings Royal is my Second favorite event. Might be just because the Kings Royal is basically in my backyard and I have to travel to go to the Knoxville Nationals. The Royal seems to have more of a rowdy crowd than the Nationals but nothing too out of control.
