Rob Poor, track promoter for Abilene Speedway tearfully informed me at 11:08 pm Sunday night that the 18 year old driver of Ryan Bard of Farmington New Mexico has passed away due to his injuries suffered while racing at Abilene Speedway late Sunday after noon. I was present and was performing the announcing duties for this event. And I can tell you from a close perspective to this situation that the entire staff at Abilene Speedway is heart broken over this news. Ryan was the New Mexico IMCA Southern Sports Modified State Point Champion. He was also 10th in the IMCA Southern Sport Modified National points. This talented young racer will be missed by many.
On behalf of Rob Poor and for all of the employee's of Abilene Speedway. I extend the sincerest simpathy to the Bard family and his racing team. Words can not express the feelings felt, the concerns shared and the sence of loss we all feel for this racer. It is a time such as this that the dark side of racing shows it's self.

Sad, sad deal and something you don't want to see as a fan nor driver. Prayers are with his family and all his friends. He was ranked tenth in national IMCA sport mods and was New Mexico sport mod champion. Only 23yrs. old.

That is very sad news. Always hate to hear that. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends as well. That's tough to deal with. Makes you think - and appreciate life.
What happened? Must've been a bad wreck for a modified. I lived in Abilene for a couple of years in '92-'93. Nice little track. I hung out in the pits every Sat night with a sprint car driver friend of mine, Tommy Fain. I heard he's racing again, in a modified now, along with his teenage son Tyler. Do you know them? Just thought I'd ask. I saw Abilene Speedway and it brought back some past racing memories.
God Bless Ryan's family and friends! Someone is praying for you all.
Let's Go Racin'!!

very sad. condolences to all his loved ones.
Tragic incidents like those are why I tell my nephew when there isn't a single tumble at a sprint car race - it's a very very good thing. He's catchin on too.

I thought maybe I read 23 yrs. old. Either way it is just really terrible. And please, nobody take this the wrong way because a loss of life no matter how old is tragic and heartbreaking. But what really tugs at me is that this is somebodys son, grandson or boyfriend. When you look at it in the perspective, then you sit and think of your own son or daughter, it really hits home and makes you want them to be by your side to protect them forever. That is the bad part about knowing all these "kids" at SFS and other tracks and knowing their families Alot of you father/son combos who frequent the races are doing it mostly to spend quality time with each other doing what you both love to do. It is the same with my son and his baseball, I support him and am with him every step of the way and but aside other stuff to be there for his support. I would no longer be here if something were to ever happen to either one of my kids as it would kill me to no end. I can only imagine what a parent would be going through. Bad enough on the racetrack when your kid gets involved in a wreck.
This accident gets your attention when you stop, sit and think somebodys kid was killed with his parents watching their son doing what he loved to do. That is what bothers me the most.

I heard this very sad news today, for those who do not know this is the grandson of Ed and Pat Bard of Lawton. Ed raced many years ago at the Lawton Speedway and owned B & B Garage for many years at which I had the pleasure of doing business him. From what I understand he was involved in a crash and the car was engulfed in flames. Please remember Ed and his family in your prayers as they are already in mine, what a terrible loss at such a young age, GOD SPEED!
