Brian, Was at OKC Winter Nat. this weekend and sat with some people from the Lawton area and we got to talking about way back when down there and got a trivia ques. for ya , Who use to pack the track in a Gorilla mask? , was back in the early eighties for a hint, we got a big kick out of talking about that Friday night at OKC. Curious if you remembered who use to do that. The People I am refferring to were the Cox's , which are kin to the Avant's out of Grandfield area. Quick note guess sprint racing is very much alive in Okla. as there were 70 sprints at OKC and 41 Sprints at South Coffeyville this past weekend.

I wasn't around much in the early eighties. During those years my Dad was staying away to keep from thinking about getting back in. About the only shows we saw then was the WoO. With less information my GUESS would have been Howie Sewell. I tend to find my memories need a little adjusting now and then.
Now a trivia question back to you, you should know this one-- Who used to pack the track wearing a huge sombrero? I would give you a hint but it would make it too easy since you spent two weeks with him in Dallas.
Since the feeder system is alive and well I'm sure the sprints are going to be around for many years.

Not Sewell , It was Lawton's own Billy Beville, drove the 727 Late Model , often wondered if that mask got a little warm during the summer months and the ol "Bullet" was inticed to wear that Sombrero by the "Joker" his brother if I remember correctly.
Was looking through some old pics in a shoe box I have of just my all time hero Shady McWhorter #9 out of Grapevine Tx. and if I can field a car next year thinking of going with a Red/Yellow type paint scheme/Graphics deal like he had for many years in the 70's.
Going to try to catch up with the Bullet this weekend at Dallas , not sure how much he still runs his Late Model , See on occasion where John E. Boy runs a Modified at the Bowl.

Okay now we're even. Can you spell GOTCHYA? It was Shady McWhorter that wore the sombrero. His car was very narrow and his shoulders would stick out both sides a little. Then making it more hilarious he would wear a sombrero while packing the track. This was in the very early '70s.

Ya know funniest thing you talk about Sombrero's , Funny watching Mario Fuentes back in 1978 from across the parking lot make use of the Lawton Costitiution in the Lee Blvd. shopping center before an NCRA one Sunday afternoon, never seen the Constitution used that way before,LOL. Just speaking of Sombrero's wearin race car drivers.
