the following is an e-mail response to my concerns regarding the "T-shirt controversy"

Thank-you very much for your e-mail. While I know it wasn't the main point of your e-mail, I do want to share that each individual track sets their own ticket prices for World of Outlaws races. This actually varies quite a bit from track track based on what the think they need to charge in order to be able justify paying the increased purse, tow money and sanction fees for the event. As an example, we only charge $25 for a WoO race at one of the tracks we own, Lernerville Speedway, but do charge $30 at another one of our tracks, Orange County Fair Speedway.

Back to your main concern, the rumors that we are eliminating driver merchandise trailers, or going back to the days where drivers were only able to sell merchandise in the pit area are not true.

The World of Outlaws would like to see ALL of our drivers selling merchandise in the grandstand area as you suggested, as we understand that it is an extra source of much needed cash for many of our teams. We also believe that it would help build a fan following for some of our future stars, as well as give fans access to merchandise from several of our veterans that don't have merchandise available in the stands.

We are considering a plan where every driver would be represented in multiple driver only trailers, as many dirt tracks don't have room for every driver to have their own trailer. In addition to making that merchandise available to all of the fans at every race, we would encourage the teams that have their own merchandise trailers to continue to bring them to major events and events where they know that they have a large fan base, as well as sell at their transporters after the race.

Sometimes only part of the real story gets out. Hopefully we will find a solution that everyone understands and continue to provide our fans the opportunity to support the drivers that are part of the greatest show on dirt!

So I say give them the benifit of the doubt on this one. Seems clear to me now.

It would be nice if more people could learn to not jump to conclusions before they know all the facts. Unfortunately it's probably never going to be that way because some people seem to thrive on reading between the lines. If they weren't jumping to conclusions they wouldn't get any exercise at all. Smile

I'm not a big racing shirt buyer. This year I bought a Joel Cryderman Late Model and a Richert Memorial Sprint shirt. I don't know if it's true of other people my age but I still feel like I'm walking around wearing a billboard when I put on a racing shirt. Racing shirts used to say the name of the team and the car number and maybe had some stripes on the sleeves and that was it. I don't know when the cartoon shirts we wear today first started but I can't recall having any until sometime in the 80's. The first ones were pretty modest by today's standards but the past few years they have gotten pretty crazy looking. Once in a while I'll wear one into the office on a Friday and I get some strange stares from the suit and tie types when I'm walking through the St. Paul Skyway system.

At least there's one good thing about the cartoon shirts we're wearing. If I dribble ketchup all over the front there's usually enough red and dayglow orange in the shirt that nobody can see it.

I remember the old Barhdall shirts, just 1 word, or the Nance speed equipment shirts.

These are/were neat shirts.

New shirts are way to "busy", and they ALL look alike.

Mr. Geisler....while I appreciate your "political" response, the fact remains that one driver that was in attendance at the summit and doesn't even have a t-shirt trailer (I'll let you all try to guess), strongly disagrees with your new and improved statement above. It was stated, that the drivers could choose 15 dates to bring their trailers...any 15 that they would like. Maybe the "major" events catchall didn't specifically state the number..but we can all get the drift. My question would be why are you interested in this at all??? I would think with the mounting debt and dissent growing that you would leave this issue alone. You guys can let him off the hook if you want...but I suggest you read between the lines carefully.

I have followed the whole WoO/NST dispute for a long time.

I just got a very similar email.

I supported WoO simply because a driver I know suggested that WoO was going in the right direction under the new management and I like Shane Carson and the people I know.

The idea of putting in inventory of drivers shirts according to a yet to be announced Points/Sales position, with some drivers having more shelf space that others does not appeal to me.

I would suspect that a large amout of the profit from the shirts will be required for the WoO's part of the program. (which will pass on the the fans)

Having a bunch of WoO trailers selling a small number of items from each driver would sure ruin the atmosphere a bunch.

Any race track that doesn't have the room for the drivers trailers might not be worthy of visiting.

A drivers trailer coral like takes place at US36 Raceway adds much to the overall excitement of the show for the younger fans.

Respectfully, the young people are the future of the sport. IF the WoO wants to have a future, the might consider having the place be kid friendly.

If this is only all about money, I would hope that NONE of the teams sign on.

Reading the above email says less with more words than about anything I have heard outside of a political debate.

WoO, please remember that the drivers need you and YOU need the drivers.

The drivers have more of a chance making a living without WoO than WoO does with no drivers.

My thought is, get off your asses and go out and hustle some major series sponsors and promote the races without the attempted rape of the drivers.

A gung ho special events person just left Knoxville, maybe you could hire him to help you out (hehehe)

WoO, do something different, get some junk the people want to buy in your inventory, compete against the drivers for shirt sales by having a more saleable product, not a forced confication of a drivers livleyhood.

Respectufully

Duane

sprinty11,

You are 100% correct.

Mr. Geisler says exactly the same thing as Terry McCarl said, except he put his WoO spin to it.

"...We are considering a plan where every driver would be represented in multiple driver only trailers..." (another way of saying the WoO wants to sell the drivers merchandise, just like McCarl stated)

"...we would encourage the teams that have their own merchandise trailers to continue to bring them to major events and events where they know that they have a large fan base, as well as sell at their transporters after the race..." (here's the (15) races that McCarl also stated and they have always been able to sell out of their transporters after the race)

Terry McCarl wasn't jumping to any conclusions...CZ

Where else are you going to race for the kind of purse the tour pays? Guess what...the All Stars don't have driver trailers either. So, where are you going to race for $10K to win other than the WoO or $5k to win other than the ASCoC?

There are plenty (maybe, it seems to be shrinking) of $3k, $1500 and $1200 to win races to attend.

Does anyone REALLY think somebody has forgotten the lessons of 2006 and would try to start a "drivers based" series? Besides, how many tracks would even consider taking a chance on booking such a thing.

Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. It's not going to happen in sprint car racing because even if some competitors and fans would desire it, promoters wouldn't touch it.

Sorry, but if you take tow money and race with a series that pays the kind of purse WoO does every night, has most of the big high paying races under its sanction and has working relationships most nearly all the tracks that could support high paying races, well...the series sets the rules and procedures.

Frankly, I don't know of any fans that would not attend a race if drivers' merchandise trailers weren't on the location. There are far more important issues in the sport to discuss.

Again, I'm not knocking anyone from making as much coin as they can, drivers, series, promoters, whatever. It's just that people race with the WoO for a reason. The whole is more important than individual pieces. There are still over twenty teams racing nightly across the country with the series. If it's so damn bad...why do they continue to do it?

What kool-aid?

I'm just stating things they way they really are. If someone has alternatives to what is....go ahead and state them.

I just get tired of all the griping. The WoO series is giving guys a chance to race for more money and prestige, in front of bigger crowds night in and night out than anywhere else. Promoters are booking shows, at least as far as I can tell. Drivers follow the series in greater numbers than ever before. We all saw how the split affected the racing scene. Promoters were the biggest proponents for settling last year's debacle. Does anyone REALLY think anything would be different if someone was silly enough to try it again?

Not kool-aid. It's just the way things are.

and what will the spin be if more drivers than ever drop from the tour after this year?

Kville would certainly benefit from McCarl staying home...

"...Does anyone REALLY think anything would be different if someone was silly enough to try it again?..."

That's what DIRT is banking these decisions on. That's why Terry McCarl is 100% correct.

So I guess, John, that if DIRT says in 2009 they're taking away the drivers tow money, they should just accept that to?

Do you have any idea how much money they're talking about taking away from those drivers who really push their own merchandise?

DIRT feels they have the upper hand now, (and they might have), and they're beginning to show their cards...CZ
